Hi Everyone

Just plucking up the courage to change my site, It is hosted by Host4Profit I have saved two copy's of my site one to work on and one in case I make a mess first time round.

I'm going to try NVU, however my concern is they ask for site name, web site info http address which is ok then they go on to ask for publishing "server address, user name and password".

Is it safe to give them this when you hear from people on this forum saying they have been hacked.

I really need to get on with changing my site but do not want to loose any of my work when it is done, if it is not safe to use what else can we use?

If it is safe will I need the info from HostProfit for them

Since NVU is, or was when I last used it over a year ago, an application used on your own computer then the information you add to it should only be held within your own computer.

I don't think its absolutely necessary to configure it with the FTP information it asks for to publish the saved files. See if you can skip that part and just use it to edit the web pages. Then save the edited files and upload them manually with either an FTP client or within the hosting account control panel.

The reason not to use a built-in publisher to upload the files is if you are not sure what you are doing you may overwrite a file on your site by accident.

I am using Nvu and I never was asked to give any details.
I just downloaded it and start using. I edit my pages and save them to my computer and then upload them to H4p.

BTW Nvu has a new version called Kompozer.

Tanny and Houdy have bothe given good advice.

I backup my files via the webepanel for my site.

Then, I just open each page in NVU and edit.
When done, I check what they look like on internet explorer and when Im happy I just go back to the webepanel and upload the file via the files manager menu (box at the bottom)
hit refresh and all done!

Its good you have a backup and even if you stuff it up - Pat can fix it for you.
The only problem will be if you have had Suzanne or Darrin do any work - Pat cant get that back.

I am still working on my first page to get it uploaded. Tried to upload it using Nvu with no luck. Then went to godaddy and used their upload tool and got it as far as godaddy, but can't get it to my site address. Downloaded coffeecup today and still trying to figure out how it all works and will give it a shot. I've never done this uploading of web sites before, but still trying. Been a week and a half now since I got my account with godaddy and had problems with them and their free stuff, such as their web site builder, still doesn't work. But I had good luck with Nvu and it only took me a couple hours to build my site using Nvu.

I use Nvu with no problems. Like Tanny said, I just downloaded the software to my computer and started using it. It did take me a few months to get familiar enough with it to feel confident using it.

In the beginning, because EVERYthing about websites, downloading, uploading, WEBePanel (C-Panel for some) was new to me, I had a lot of problems with Nvu. But the more I practiced, the easier it got.

Like Kym said, you do a back up of your site first so you have the entire original. I do a new backup about once a month, then get the pages I want to edit from that backup each time.

Once the backup is on my computer and I have opened the zipped files, I then open the page I want to edit (for example the Index page which is your home page), save a "working" copy, make the desired changes to the working copy and save it, then open the saved file in my web browser to double check that it is all as it should be.

Once it all looks okay, I go back to the ORIGINAL Index file and rename it, then I go to the working copy Index file and rename it as Index. Then I go to my H4P WEBePanel and upload the new edited Index file. Oh, I guess I rename the Index file in my WEBePanel first, before uploading the new one. (I'm a worry wart - don't want to overwrite it in case there's a problem I missed.)

It took me a long time in the beginning to figure this process out. I kept having problems with pages not looking right in Nvu. Eventually, I realized that I had to get the page I wanted to edit from the right location in the downloaded backup. Once I figured that out, it was clear sailing from there.

For me, it was all trial and error and learning from my mistakes. Now, I feel like a truly competent webmaster! (This is thanks to mentors and members from the PIPS Power Group where I got the Nvu program from, and special thanks to Suzanne Morrison and her SEO guides.)

Hi Dave,
Did you switched from H4p to godaddy? You have to give them all your website details, change IP and DNS. Try contacting their support or ask in the main WF.

Most hosting companies have an upload tool and a WSIWYG tool, so it is very easy to change files even without saving and uploading (but not recommended).

Have reloaded it and it is not asking for any information so I'd better get started before I change my mind.

Has anyone used Ewans Free web builder? its based in NVU just wondered if it would be easier to use and can you do more with it

Hi Micheal

I have used Front Page in the past and found it ok, they say if you can use that you can use NVU put I'm finding it hard going.

You can update with Front Page and alter the settings so that you get a full page instead of the grey bits down the side.

H4P will still host it just the same.

Just imported my site into NVU, Front Page and Ewans My Free web site builder.

In for a penny in for a pound as they say in the UK

My main focus for this week is to alter my site before it drives me crazy

How I use NVU

Rightly or wrongly, the way I use NVU requires only copy and paste functions..no uploading or anything like that. There was a link in the old forum to a video tutorial - i'll try and find it.

In the meantime, what I do is go to my H4P file manager and open the html file of the page I am going to be working on (lets say index.html) and without doing anything to it, I scroll down to the bottom and save file as indexold.html. I then copy the source code of the page index.html file.

Once I have copied the index.html file, I then go to nvu and find the source page - delete what is by default in there and paste the previously copied index.html source code. Then I view it in the normal or preview page. Then I start making my changes. Once I am happy with my changes, I then copy the source code from nvu into the file on h4p.

Copying from nvu to h4p - I open my index.html file and delete the entire source code within it giving me a now blank page (remember I had previously done a indexold.html backup) Then I paste the new source code from nvu. Then I scroll down the bottom and save file as usually something like indextest1.html - this leaves the original index.html intact and I now have my new file indextest.html. I then view the new indextest1.html in internet explorer to make sure i am happy. If not, I go back to nvu until I am - If I am happy, I delete the index.html file then open indextest1.html file and scroll down and save as index.html ...I now hopefully have a new looking web page.
