You can do it with subdomains. You'll have a seperate subfolder in your public_html folder in FTP. Upload Wordpress files in there and do the same as you did with the main domain. Should work.

Sounds like you're describing Scrapebox. You can search for specific keywords and use a footprint like 'developed by Wordpress' and it will only find relevant sites/blogs. I have been using this...
