No, don't disable - you want to continue to 301 the old url to the new one, in case you have backlinked to the old URL. The 301 passes link juice to the new url.

I guess one of the obvious things you may or may not have checked: Is this site built on Wordpress, and if so, have you checked to see if the switch is set under "Privacy" settings to allow search...
