I also look at their URL and messages (Tweets) they have posted. I don't follow spammers, x rated , or useless dribble ( and some competitors)

I wrote 30 articles and they have generated approx 5000 page views and over 500 clicks over the last year in a very competitive market. Not bad but I don't rely soley on article marketing.

Yes it could affect your rankings but depends on what you change and how many you change. If you change the anchor text wording and/or url, your site's ranking could be affected but it also depends...
