Embedded Servers for small devices

Hi ! I have a project to make an embedded server for home appliances using Atmel AVR Microcontroller (Atmega32). I dont know much about it as I am making this for the first time. Please put in some suggestions about it. How should I program the device and what functions are to be put in it?

    Hardware programming is a real challenge, I have been considering using UC3 to develop some flash FPU devices, are you using the 8bit 16bit or 32 bit there is a ton of white paper on this but I would say this probably not for the faint of heart, LOL,

      I am using an 8bit controller is that good enough
      The idea is just to control the devices from internet like switching things on/off

    Have you seen the misterhouse program? Its not for the embedded side, but may give you an idea of what instructions can be possible/required
