Need help uploading a zip file

Hi,

I have an ebook in pdf form that I have zipped with winzip. I created a separate folder under my domain called pdf. I then used FileZilla to upload the zipped pdf from my pc to Hostgator. My problem is, when I test the download, I get the following error: Error [C:\Users\Ken\AppData\Local\Temp\YouBeTheJudge-2.zip];

When I click OK on that I get: Cannot open file: it does not appear to be a valid archive. If you downloaded this file, try dowloading the file again.

I created the pdf with Acrobat pro 8.0 and zipped with winzip 9.0. Also, when I try just download the pdf w/o being zipped I get the error: "There was an error opening this document. The file is damaged and could not be repaired."

I have deleted the zip and pdf files and re-created both and retried but with the same result.

What am I doing wrong? Please help! I am techno challenged so I need step - by - step please.

Thanks.
Ken

Are you sure the file has completely uploaded before trying to access it? The last time I got that particular PDF error, it was because the server timed out before the file was completely uploaded. Check the file size on the server against the file size on your hard drive.

FTP files can be loaded in Text (ASCII) mode or Binary mode. If you have pictures or executable files (like ZIP files) they must be uploaded in Binary mode or they will get scrambled. The mode is a function of your FTP client, it has nothing to do with your CPanel or a server setting.

Most FTP clients automatically determine the mode and should correctly pick Binary mode for a ZIP file. Perhaps you should try a different ZIP utility like 7 ZIP or Pea ZIP.

Pavon, I am trying to upload a pdf which I want to zip up for downloading.
Lisa, the file sizes are the same on server and desktop.
mhuktar, I understand a bit of what you say but some of it is greek to me.

Basically, I can open the zipped file just fine on my pc with no errors but when I upload that same file to my webserver I get the errors mentioned whether it is zipped or the actual pdf. I am just right clicking on the pdf file and highlighting winzip and choosing add to zip. I select New and then browse to the path where it is located on my pc which has all my website files. I then just uploaded it with filezilla.

    dlmartin,

You are a life saver! That is what the problem was. I had uploaded another script that needed to be sent in ASCII and didn't switch it back to binary.

    Thank you so much!

    Take care,
