Can anyone quote me on this?

I want to make single niche classifieds marketplace with option to list auctions.
I will purchase one of auction/classifieds software to start from there. I will need literally 100's of modifications, new custom features, escrow system, dispute system and design done as well.

approximately how much money a good programmer freelancer would charge for whole project?

why not do a dummy job on freelancer.com or elance.com.

I use elance for any issues or pricing I come across.

It would cost you $100's if you want it done well.

unless on of the guys on here can do it cheaper.

You should write the list of the modifications and send it to programmers, only way to get an accurate estimate (but really an estimate, cuz you can never predict the hours spent, so better to go "project" budget and set it in the start, so it doesnt go out of the limits.)

If you were to go on elance/freelancer etc I'd start with $750-1000 and see what all the programmers have to say. You can have a chat with them before you need to put money in escrow to decide on what needs done and how much they charge per part etc.

What are you guys smoking? lol

There is absolutely no way to give the OP any sort of meaningful price range for what he/she might expect to pay for the project without first knowing a LOT more details about the project (would need to know the details about ALL of the modifications, new features, etc).

Heck, I would charge money just for the time it would take to read a project description that described 100's of modifications in detail, lol.

But for a *good* programmer to develop a script that has "100's of modifications, new custom features, escrow system, dispute system and design done as well" ... that sounds like a 6 figure project, easily. I mean, that sounds like a massive amount of work even for a team of developers, let alone a single developer. But again... there's no way to give any sort of meaningful cost estimates without knowing a LOT more details.

OP... if you're serious about spending that kind of money on a project, it would be FAR better to have the script developed from scratch, than to make that many modifications to an existing script. And you would want to hire a project manager who knows what the heck they're doing. No offense, but you don't sound like you have the first clue about managing a project of that complexity.

        Brandon,

        You've given some solid advice....

The first step is the OP hiring someone to document exactly what is needed. That could easily run into thousands of dollars... You cannot simply pop over to oDesk and ask for a "free" quote.

Next, you can post the documents on sites like oDesk to see what the price range is....

The OP needs to be ready to shell out some serious cash... You cannot eat steak on a hamburger budget...

Finally, the OP needs to look at it from the Developer's perspective....

If I told you I was going to pay you to work around my house "for a few days," would you want to know exactly how many days before agreeing on a price?

        I know I would....

"For a few days" could be three... or thirty three... It is wide open to interpretation.

You can list your full requirements for the job before you get a quote, upload a PDF list of exactly what you want done. Then wait for the quotes to come in.

OP read Brandon Tanners post, he is perfectly correct. You would be wasting your time buying an existing script and then have a developer modify stacks!

You would be far better off just commissioning a developer to create you a script from scratch.

I personally would charge around the $2000 mark to create a script of the complexity level of my own article directory script. You could probably get a coder from the Far East to complete it for less but would you get exactly what you wanted?

      network39,

That is a big problem.... If he doesn't know exactly what he wants, he can never get it...

Working as a Consultant in Software and Web Development for two decades, I've seen over and over again you get what you pay for.....

The fatal flaw to "cheap" development....

People only consider a small aspect of the equation... Up front cost....

They have no clue that maintenance is a huge part of the total cost.... The "cheaper" the Developer the more ongoing maintenance costs skyrocket...

It is a pay now...or pay later situation.
