How useful is SEO if you're just one algorithm change away from falling into complete oblivion? Has anyone ever survived an algorithm change?

Nope. Nobody has ever survived. Nobody is ranking for anything anymore. Just look in Google. When you search for something... nothing.

Nothing, all bullshit sites rank better. I am sure Google will someday displays their ads only in searches. It is very hard to survive from their algorithms.
