Currently loading speed appears to be a small SEO factor, so not the end of the world if you don't have a super fast website.

So work on site speed, but don't panic about it SEO wise right now (in the future I think it will be a bigger SEO factor). Right now you should be more concerned at the direct loss in sales/visitors due to a slow website. Every second extra your site takes to load costs you lost visitors/sales directly and with more users using mobiles to connect (slower internet connection) it's become more important. When a site loads slowly, visitors leave.

Run your site through tools like https://developers.google.com/speed/pagespeed/insights/ and fix as many problems as you can.

Loading speed is actually quite important, especially if a visitor needs to wait 1 minute for your website to load! If it takes a mere few seconds, then you're good though!

It's a long article, but if you're new to this then I suggest you read it. Hope it helps!

That's so true from my end. I click a lot of links from this site but then click away when I start staring at a spinning circle. In most cases, this happens on WordPress blogs.

Actually, based on psychology researches and UX reports, if your site loads more than 8s 90% of visitors will drop it. This 8s anyway, is very important time to get someone interested into your content. So, if your site loads in 4s, you have 4s left to get someone interested in.

That's from the point of UX, but from the point of SEO. Google investigate performance a lot recently and it is quite important factor as well.

To sum up, you better take care of it asap ! :-)

Yes, loading speed is one of those criteria that affects SERP. The main factors affecting loading speed is the inline CSS, high resolution images and videos. Try minimizing these set of issues and your impact on the site speed will be minimized and apparently the SERP will have a hype with the set of keywords mentioned.

I don't know which platform you are using(like wordpress, joomla, drupal etc..) but if you are using wordpress first thing you need cache cleaning(use w3 cache) than you need to setup CDN. Your website is slow because of couple reasons; like heavy images, heavy css files and etc... so CDN is essential to decrease your load time and increase your page speed in around world. You need to learn how to setup a CDN:

You can look at these options to improve the load speed

    - Network of your server hosting (belong which hosting are you using)
    - Server performance (server strong or not)
    - Server caching
    - Dynamic data caching (cache your data)
    - CDN (serve users base on their location to get the best load time)

Compared to many other ranking factors, site speed has less impact on the website's ranking. Although if your site has faster load times, it definitely improves user experience and satisfaction. Great user experience can help your site gain more organic traffic.

If you have slow loading site, check on your host, images should be optimized for the web, widgets/plugins, ads on your site, design theme, etc.

In most cases the javascript code is what causes a slow loading of a website. You can place the code in the footer or at least minify it!

You need to find a site that checks your sites load speed. It will test all elements to see what is causing the slow load time. Just Google check sites load time or something like that. It will then tell you the elements that are taking the longest. It is likely images or large media files. You can the fix the issue.

    Hi All,

I have a client with a website 'www.ziparide.com'. I am working on the SEO part of it. On checking through developers tool, i know the page speed is very low. I've recommended him to refer to tool, see the suggestions and implement them through his webmasters. However, he is particular in asking my suggestions on improving the page speed. I've no idea as I used to work on wordpress sites which required plugins mostly. Any suggestions here would be helpful?

I don't think page speed affects rankings much, but they do affect conversions.

If you're using wordpress, there are many ways to speed it up. Google it, there are tons of guides out there.

But a good host, with a caching plugin, and some htaccess tweaks got my site from 3 seconds down to less than a second.

There is no 'one size fits all' cure for the speed at which a website loads. There are many factors involved and in my experience, hosting is usually the biggest culprit, particularly if you use shared hosting.

Here are some suggestions you might consider in order to nail down whats causing your problem.

I should point out one thing before I go through the suggestions. People can become obsessed about their load speed. Don't.

As long as people see something loading within a second or two and the page loads fully within 5 seconds or so, you wont get penalised by Google. In order to get penalised, it would have to be very very slow. Google does not rank faster websites over slower ones as a matter of course.

Your main focus should be on the user experience. Obviously, the faster it loads, the better the experience but don't lose any sleep over 1 second.

Ideally, you page should load fully in under 3 seconds.

    1. Head over to Load Impact and test your website. As the number of users increase, your server should serve up more resources as they are required.

If you see the load time increasing as the number of users increase, then your server is not doing this.

    2. Then go to Webpage Speed test. Test your url there and look for the following things.
SERVER: The time to first byte should be under half a second and the page should start to load in under a second, regardless of any content you have on your site. Any slower and you should consider changing server.
PAGE SIZE: If your server is loading reasonably quickly, then you need to look at the amount of content it's serving up and reduce it. Look down the page of the result for content breakdown. It shows you two things, requests and bytes.
REQUESTS: The number of requests needs to be as small as possible because the more requests your page needs to make for CSS and JS files, the slower it loads. Many of these requests can be combined into single requests to save time, but thats another question.
BYTES: The size of the files are important, particularly in the case of images. If you can reduce the size of these and then combine all the images into one request using sprites, you will save a lot of time. There is nothing wrong with having a million images on your page, as long as they don't slow the loading time.

You might consider looking at your plugins, especially one that request external resources. Checkout the P3 plugin to do that.

So.... Check your server, check your page size and requests and the amount of bytes requested.

If you want, ping me over your URL and I will have a look at it for you.

    Cheers

Make sure that you don't have ads that are adding on
load time for the visitor. Some systems actually crash from it.

It really depends on the loading speed problem of the website. If the website server has a time out problem and search engines have difficult time crawling the site, the effect on SERP will be astronomical.
