First off thank you for reading this post. I am wondering am I better off with 50 high quality ezine article backlinks or 1000 lesser known backlinks? Basically am I better off with smaller high quality backlinks or loads of lesser known backlinks?

    Of course high quality backlinks are better than lesser known backlinks.. but likewise, high quality backlinks are harder to get.

    A good link building plan should include getting both quality and lesser quality links.

      Hi Nicholas,

      Don't rely on too many links from one domain like EZA. SEO orthodoxy suggests that one external site backlinking to you is only worth one 'vote' for your site (regardless of the number of actual links).

      Whether that's true or not, it is unlikely that your site will rank well with links from just one site - especially in a competitive niche.

      Spread your backlinks around with IP Diversity and exact anchor text links. Pump the URL of the #1 site in your niche into Yahoo Site Explorer and see where they're getting their link juice from.

      In my experience, linking to just one INNER page on your site only and ignoring your homepage is the best way to go.

    The SEO benefit of mulitple articles is not in the boost form the ranking, but the boost form the longtail keywords getting better exposure. You could have 1,000 links from the same site and it won't do much for you in and of itself. But if you have 1,000 different keyword rich articles I think you can see the real benefits. The quality sites get crawled, and fast and it works.

    If you have 1,000 links from Article Directories that do not have much clout (Assuming there are 1,000) you also won't get much of an SEO boost because Google Rewards Quality. And until Google no longer dominates search the old Quantity approach is an exercise in frustration.

    You should also consider what you are telling Google when you chase after all those low value links.

    So the correct answer is Quality, but not for the reasons you are probably thinking.

    i choose only 20 high PR article directories, then i make a variation of same article for the next 20. i also vary my links for every 20 submissions.

    The best backlinking approach I can think of is focusing a little bit more on people rather than search engines, therefore traffic could be a thing to consider here.

    You can obtain perhaps the highest quality inbound links from article writing. Essentially, you choose a topic that is related to your website's subject matter, which necessarily is probably something you know about, or your site would not be what it is. Then you can a write an article of several paragraphs about that particular topic.
    When you submit your article to the individual article directories, you will be able to include a byline or resource box with your website link in it. Then each time someone uses your article, they are compelled to include your byline. This qualifies as viral marketing.
