[Need Advice] 2 websites: 1 stuck on 2nd page, the other not ranking

It's been a while since I've posted so here we go:

One website: charlotteconferencing.com is stuck at the top of the 2nd page for its brand name. I finally got it to outrank its facebook page and directory listings (except for YP). But I just can't get it to scoot into the top 10. Don't know if need on-page optimization or better backlinks. I've tried posting blog post links on social media, linkedin, and medium.com and pinging the site using high PR ping sites.

The other website: hamiltonscarservice.com is a pretty established website and ranking #1 for its brand name but its not ranking for other keyterms such as "new jersey car services". I'm thinking its an on-page issue....overoptimization on the keywords.

What do you guys think? Any actionable advice?

I only took a quick look at charlotteconferencing.com. I see only a handful of backlinks, all of which are nofollow. If that's correct, then there's your answer. Basically no off-page SEO.

For that site, yea...I'm trying to figure out where to get dofollow links. The telecom/teleconference niche is....pretty tough. Very few blogs. Trying to figure out what's the best article directory sites to go for. I'm wondering if there's any tech news sites that aren't hard on reaching out to.

The on page SEO isn't great either. The same keyword gets used in al the page titles. Also there arnt any headings on the pages that contain descriptive keywords.

      Our Services isnt descriptive.

Conference Calling Services would have been a better heading on the services page.

Analyze the competition within the related field because it is possible that there are some websites are performing well compared to yours. Check if you are targeting the right keyword phrases to convert well for the website. Focus on users intent and not solely in exact keyword phrases.

How would he know what the correct keyword phrases are, and how would he know where to implement them?

Hamilton's car service doesn't have that many good links either, but at least there's some.

However, the layout is badly broken. When width goes below 1200 pixels you completely lose the main navigation. The boxes on front page say "chauff" and "transpa".

Yes you need better on page optimization like unique page titles that contain keywords relevant to each page.

You have a SEO plugin installed so use it and create a unique title for each page in the folowing format.

Primary Keyword | Secondary Keyword | Company Name

Try to use a different keyword for each page title.

Unless you have a extremely popular Brand Name that is well known all over the world then it is useless to rank for your domain name. You want to rank for conference calling and similar words.

Use H1 and H2 headings on your pages that contain the keyword you are optimizing that page for.

Once your on page SEO is in order then you can start link building.

Have you done any keyword research or did you just use words that came to mind?

Have you analysied websites that offer similar services and had a look at what keywords they use?

Just google New Jersey Car Service and look at the headings of the results you see. Allot use taxi service, Chauffeur services ect.

By the way chauffers is spelt wrong.

Until I started understanding how the CTR is important ! if MORE people start to visit your website, even on the second or third page, it will rank on first page eventually.
Ok, so tell me your strategy on how to get MORE people to VISIT your website that is stuck on the 2ND page of the search results if you have 10 really good results on the 1st page? I have a few ideas but would be interested in knowing your ideas if they worked.

dewalds86 - awesome advice. personally, I think charlotteconferencing needs more backlinks. the sites I want to target are ok on on-page.....or maybe they might need improving.

hamiltonscarservice has a ton of backlinks but needs improvement on on-page.

nettiapina (and this goes to everyone else as well) - how would you tell if a backlinks is bad or not right away? seeing malicious links like "vagina" or "panty" in your backlinks or backlink terms is an automatic no no. but how would you quickly go through your backlinks to see which one needs to be removed? Low Trust/Citation Flow?

another question: if your page has the keyword mentioned 29 times within 300-400 words, that is considered over saturdated, right? for example, if I am targeting "new jersey car services" and it appears twice and "car service" appears 20 times, would I need to remove "car service" and shrink it down?

Good question. Often you can't thoroughly evaluate each link, but you need to have a backlink checker. Yes, that's relying on data that may be incomplete or even wrong, but at least you're not flying blind.

My quick impressions in this case came form Majestic.

A good link is one that's followed, is on reasonably good site, and sits on a page that doesn't have too many links, and also has some juice to pass. If you take a quick glimpse of a backlink checker you have some impression about the first and the last of these, but it's not the complete picture even for those two criteria.

I would not remove or disavow backlinks unless you've got an ultimatum from Google. If the backlinks profile is seriously FUBAR it's probably best to just switch domains. But in the usual case just let them be. Try to acquire better links in the future.

Usually a bunch of low-quality links don't hurt. They just don't help either.

That's a bit much, and the site did look a tad over optimized. But it's probably not your biggest problem.

My website was stuck in page 5 of SERP ranking, and it took almost a year until I get my ranking back on the 1st page. Google released an update that time, and my site got affected on it but in a good way. All I remember is that my site lost a lot of backlinks and then I started building new backlinks for my site continuously until Google released its update.

Well here's the challenges I tend to face:

      - Figuring out what backlinks are worth having and what backlinks are worth removing
      - Figuring out where to get backlinks from if most of the backlinks your competitors have are partner sites. If you have no partners, what are you gonna do? blog outreach and article submissions?
      - Figuring out what is wrong with your page if it already contains the keywords you are trying to rank for. Most of the time, I notice the pages are stuffed with keywords so I have to figure out a way to dilute the keyword/text ratio or...create a new page targeting that keyword.

PBN (make your own partner sites)

    That means 0 offsite SEO.

You need high quality links pointing to your site. That can be guest posts, a PBN, some 301ed powerful domains, web2.0s even.

The attitude of "Build it and they will come" does not apply here.
