It is not.

In 2015 most of the traditional techniques are not helpful to improve the ranking and traffic of a website. So I will suggest you to stop following this technique and try to get editorial link rather than building backlink for a website.

Blog comment has been dead for years now. I dont find any use of earning links from comments and if you are not careful they can harm your site rather than give it a boost in the SERPs.

The blog comments are important on referal visits only, if you post an interesting ,helpful comment on high traffic blog you will get a lot of refferal traffic.

Today, role of blog commenting while promoting the website is almost negligible....but the following blog sites that have essential benefits such as on "disques".

I don't think it is dead, if you will do in right ways. But commenting like Thanks for sharing or Very Good article or anything else statement does not attract admin and other visitors to focus in your blog.

If you add some valuable comment, then I am 100% sure, admin and other visitors look out your blog, and if they found, you have posted something very good, then may be some of blog owner point your blog in natural way, but It's take some time, You need to target few of blogs for 1 or 2 months.

Actually, both commenting on blog and community like forum is profitable, if you do in right way.

Final line - If you just looking for DoFollow backlinks, then old squarespace blog gives you dofollow backlinks, but don't do that, if want to visible for a long time in SERP, because penguin update will kill your blog ranking.
