Just moved from HTTP to HTTPS. Now what?

Hello,

As the title states. We just moved our forums from HTTP to HTTPS. Everything is well, SSLLabs rates us A+ and we do have some pages on our forums with embedded HTTP images. Would that cause problems?

We've also installed HSTS and I've been reading online a lot on how HTTPS affects AdSense earnings. Is it true?

What else needs to be done to get the best out of HTTPS? To no get any penalization from Google and other search engines.

Hope to get some helpful suggestions and replies.

  • If you're redirecting http to https there's really no "now what" left. This is a simple transition, and it's not much of a ranking factor either.

    • I'm not sure why you're assuming that your site will get penalized. Is there something you didn't tell us in this thread?

      I'd redirect just to be on the safe side. Google is usually pretty quick to implement new techniques, but I don't remember hearing anything on HSTS.

  • Because https requires all to be secure to be loaded, your adsense ads
    will not load all the time, as not all ads are supported. That was a big
    concern. However, I do believe that's why google came up with
    new ad code in the past year or so, making the ad code compliant
    across the board. Make sure you use the new ad code.

    I always say to keep the http version up. The internet is iffy and
    getting a secure connection all the time on an average site
    might not be possible.

    There are other ways to make the https version load without
    a 301. Just google it. And google tells you this: Make sure
    that both versions are the same, so if you add new content,
    put it on both versions.

    Sure, for simplicity you could get by with one version.

    If your adsense drops by a good amount, give it a couple
    of weeks to normalize. Don't panic yet.

    • Hello Paul,

      I have HSTS installed on my server now so that means that HTTP will redirect to HTTPS. I've changed all the links too.

      And yes, I did read about AdSense earnings experiencing a drop but so far, no huge impact. Still waiting for the day to end.
