        Yeah obviously they help. Visitors will come to your forum and if they are impressed then they will definitely join. In my forums I have seen that out of 100 visitors I have got 5 visitors who have became member. And some of them have became regular contributor also.

    Its not mandatory that you do seo for any website/blog/forum. It is just a way of marketing of your website and there are lots of other techniques through which you can do marketing such as SMO, PPC, Affiliate etc. Because SEO is a free marketing technique and it takes long time to get results in comparison of PPC. So if you have enough budget to spend then you can go for PPC & SMO. But if you don't want to spend money then go for SEO.

    Forum post links are very powerful, if you're managed to pull out one from related source. If you build the link appropriate you'll generate traffic for long term. So use your common sense when creating forum posts and insert link where it have demand.
