Multiple Local Websites - Is it possible to do well?

I am wondering if you can have multiple websites for a local service?

I have a website for my contracting service. That website is setup in Google My Business and Maps and G+ and everything else. That website is listed in all the listings and citations. That website has my business name, license number, phone number, and address on every page.

That website does pretty well, but I would like more calls. I was thinking about having a second website made, one that is super-optimized for the local area I serve (about 40 towns), while keeping my existing website up.

Is that possible?

    Have you ever seen gasbuddy.com?

If not, do a search for gas prices in your city/state.

You will undoubtedly get a site run by gasbuddy.com , geared for local.

They have hundreds of domains and sites, mostly the same,
    all pointing back to gasbuddy.com.

Amazon.com does not own hundreds of sites just for the fun of it.

However, as always, a real business should be advertising first.

      Thanks for the reply.

My website is currently my main form of advertising. I get over half of my new customers from it. I advertise in other ways, everything from EDDM to placemat ads. But nothing comes close to the amount of calls I get from the website.

So that's why I was thinking about building a second one to increase calls.

So what would my limitations be with a second local website? Can I use the same address and phone number? Would I have to try and find other citations, or would this mess up the first website?

I have found adding second sites is difficult because it's much harder to get links to them and without links, it most likely won't rank anywhere. With your main site you can get lots of legit local links from directories like Yelp, Yp.com, Facebook etc but you can't just go create second listings on all those sites for the new site when you set it up.

I would probably suggest adding more content to your existing site related to the topics or keywords you're wanting to rank for. If you're looking to rank in tons of cities, that is a strategy that I'm starting to see work less and less these days. It's better to dominate your local city first.

I have to agree that joggling with multiple sites can be difficult. Especially when it comes to content. You will have to create unique content for all your sites.

      None.

Except that many sites that let you list your business have room for only one site... Some have room for a site, a blog, and other stuff.

You would, of course, have to create backlinks. It would, of course, have to have content that converts.

Everything can be difficult. But it doesn't have to. Creating a second site, when you know what your business does is, actually, easy.

Takes some time, but it's easy.

After pondering it for a while, I was thinking that maybe it would be better to have the second website focus on a specific service that I offer, instead of it being for everything like my main website is.

It would be a much smaller website, but this service is very profitable so promoting it would be great. I already have a domain name setup for it.

FWIW, I don't have any good backlinks for my main website, just directories and stuff like that. Since it's a local website it ranks pretty well. But I assume the second website will need backlinks? Or could I do it on content alone? Not that I would be any good making content
