Adwords Results - What position is best?

I was checking to see the results of one of my Adwords campaign and I noticed that I have the number one spot. My website shows up in the pink part on the top of the left side. Is this where I want to be? Or, is the right side column the better place to be? It would cost me less.

Nr. 1 spot gives you LOTS of clicks...but some people report better results and conversions on the side #1 - #3 instead of all the way on the top.

Congratulations on being above the SERPs. This means you have achieved the thresholds for being there: great QS giving you great ranking.

On average, my data shows the top position is best. You get a higher click rate (should be obvious) but you will normally get higher conversions too. And the cost is not that different, sometimes much lower in first position, but even if it's higher, your ROI will not suffer that much.

But do test for different positions because your mileage may vary.

3-4 are the best. With 1, you get a lot of tire-kickers.

An extensive study was done in regards to this very question. Position #7 was found to have the best ROI.

These answers about the best spot are not very valuable...the fact is...that it's COMPLETELY different for every market and every conversion goal.

It may very well be that averaging out 100's of campaigns comes up with #7 being the best overall...but that doesn't mean much if for YOUR particular market and YOUR particular conversion goal...the #7 spot was 10x worse than the #4 spot for example.

Testing and tracking is the absolute only way to know.

Thanks for all the answers. Looks like a wide range of opinions! I guess I will have to test for myself. I would prefer to be 1-3 in the side column.
