Why isn't my site showing in Google?

I created a new website about a week ago (see it in my signature). It is not showing in Google even when I type in the complete address. I guess this means it is not indexed (internet newbie here). I have submitted my link to Google, Yahoo, Bing, Digg, Clipmarks, Propeller, Mister Wong, and Diigo. I also used Big Mike's RSSBot to submit my feed to RSS sites too. I will be posting articles, but wanted my site indexed first. My site was created with Wordpress. Anyone know why Google hasn't indexed it yet and suggestions on how to get it indexed by Google?

Thanks,

Cindy

  • A whole week already and not showing? Maybe Google is a bit busy crawling the other 100 Billion pages and hasn't yet caught on to your site?

Seriously. Work on generating links and give it time.

The World of Google doesn't revolve around what You are doing, or me, or any number of other new sites.

It's a big task to index everything and along the way they have to decide what matters and what doesn't.

So make sure your site can be crawled then stop worrying and get to work.

As a newbie, I wasn't sure how long it should take. I read other posts here and some say they get indexed within 10 minutes or whatever. I don't know what to think. Also, how do I make sure my site can be crawled? Thanks!

        Hi there,

I'm afraid weightloss is a very competitive market as you're no doubt aware. Google has its own time scales when it comes to new sites especially in competitive marketplaces. A website listing doesn't mean much unless people are already semi aware of your site. You won't get natural rankings for your keywords for weight loss for 12 months plus and even then you could struggle.

Two ways you can speed things up and atleast get a listing,

        1. Do a search for your site in Googles Keyword Tool
        2. Use OnlyWire to submit your content to the social networks.

Providing you've done your keyword research the fact that you've built the site using wordpress should ensure that your site is search engine friendly.

There are loads of free sites on making your site SEO friendly. Just do a search on Google. There are just too many elements to detail here. The most important is good content and a logical site structure. The crawlability of your site is pretty much sorted with Wordpress so just focus on the content elements and make sure your keyword research is bang on.

Hope thats of help. Sorry if I've depressed you :-(

Try some of these methods most marketers here use

    Blog commentating
    Article marketing by enzine articles
pr press releases about your site.
rss feeds by feedburner ect.Google loves rss feeds
videos made and created for video sites.youtube
    backlinks (angela's packages)
If that dont work then it sure will bring some traffic and get you noticed soon by google

edit: seen u mentioned rss feeds my mistake.

    Hi Cindy,

I have found the best way to have your new site indexed is to post your website in your sig on forums like you have. Write a few articles and submit them to Ezine Articles, Go Articles and also create a blog with links in your posts directing back to your main site. I did this all last week and my new site is indexed. Hope this helps.

sdcindy, create an account at identi.ca

Post a short statement and include your new website. That should index your website in about 24 hours. If not, rinse and repeat. Should do the trick.

Google should not take such a long time indexing your site. Hope you haven't used any unethical tactics. Anyways keep working and try to get more backlinks for your site so that Google can find your site from many places. First create a blog at wordpress and post unique article with keywords linking back to your site. Do it on regular basis. Bookmark your new blog content at Digg, folkd, reddit, propeller and other social bookmarking sites. Start forum posting with signature linking back to your site in do follow forums. At least twice or thrice a week ping your blog at pingler and pingomatic. Hope these process can help you to get indexed in Google.

Yeah I had noticed several days ago that the default for Wordpress was to keep the site "Private". I changed that right away. I also saw that the robots.txt was set up as follows:

      User-agent: *
      Disallow: /

I assumed that meant that crawl was blocked to all bots. So I installed a PlugIn called PC robots.txt that allows google to crawl.

you can add it on here, however there is no guarantee as to when it will be available in searches, if at all.

My site is showing up from referring sites now. But Google still doesn't know it exists, even when I type the exact URL. Even Google Webmaster Tools doesn't see it. Maybe it was that "private" thing at Wordpress (why would it default to that!!!), but I changed it about 6 days ago. I can't imagine I did anything "unethical". If you look at my site, I haven't even added any links to affiliate products yet. By the way Kieran (or anyone), does

    User-agent: *
    Disallow: /

mean all search engines can crawl the whole site or does it mean that no search engines can crawl the site?

You know it is VERY hard to predict how soon, or what types of sites get indexed by Google. As someone else mentioned in this thread, there are billions of sites worldwide, competing for indexing and ranking, not just in Google but in other search engines as well. You just have to continue working on your site's SEO, creating backlinks by posting to forums and blogs and of course writing and submitting quality articles. Then there is nothing else you can do but wait to see when Google indexes your site.

social bookmark your pages to get them index.
Just a bit of advice, weight loss is a very competitive niche and for a new to make constant sales in this market will be very difficult.

Go look at a product called Micro Niche Finder to find some low competition keywords to get started with.

Yes, I have done that and my site is showing up in the search. I was hoping that Google would recognize my link when I type it in directly. Probably the Wordpress "privacy" issue messed me up

That privacy option should be removed from wordpress lol Why would I create a website and want it blocked from a search engine? At least get rid of the default setting to allow the search engines to crawl it.

Exactly. I didn't even know it was an option until I thoroughly looked at all the settings. It's the weirdest thing to assume the majority of us write blogs that we don't want others (especially search engines) to see.

    Hey sdcindy,

I took your website and put it through the bit.ly URL shrinking service yesterday. Then I made a post on my identi.ca account. If you check google with the site : http: // www .website. com command you should see your website indexed. I just checked where I am and it is.

You should be good to go buddy!

Yeah I saw your post on identi.ca. I had posted there too. And my site is finally indexed!!!!! BTW, why shrink the URL instead of showing it directly?

      Cheers!

Thanks for all your help. My site is finally indexed for my URL. From Google Analytics, I can see I had 66 referrals from backlinks before Google finally recognized my URL. I'm sure the Privacy thing at Wordpress had something to do with it. But I am happy now.

allkeys, identi.ca is just another web 2.0 social networking site like twitter (microblogging style) almost. Basically, you sign up for an account and make short posts (I think 140 character limit) about anything and everything. Many people include links to their websites because identi.ca is a PR7 and gets spidered like crazy!

sdcindy, I don't have concrete evidence on whether or not shrinking your URL and running it through identi.ca effects indexing one way or another as opposed to not shriking and using identi.ca. I do know that I have been using this strategy for a while and it has worked more often that not. Also, I was told that the shruken URL that is produced by bit.ly counts as a backlink so maybe that has something to do with it.

Glad that you are finally indexed.
