Help Needed with Local Organic Search

Hi,

I have a local business and my goal is to get local people to my site. In terms of ORGANIC google search, how do I decide between these two keywords?:

web developer
web developer short hills, nj

I ask because I am under the impression that when local people search google, the keyword "web developer" will come up with local results.

I've always thought that optimizing for such a broad term like "web developer" is a waste of time due to the extensive competition for such a broad term, and that's why I've attempted to focus the keyword because I've been reading that google is "intelligent" in terms of returning results based on the location from where you searched.

A search from my computer on google right now does not give me any local results for the term "web developer".

Thanks in advance.

  • You answered your own question.

Now dig in and find every possible word related to Web Developer that a person might use that targets your product.

Then add those words to your local search and all the abbreviations. One guy might type in nj the next new jersey.

You should be able to figure that all out with keyword research.

More importantly make sure you show up in local search and on google maps, bing maps, and wherever else you can.

sorry. so you are saying that I should use the suffixes, "nj, new jersey", and that I should continue to stay away from broad words like "web developer"?

      thank you.

Let me jump in here and say - correct. Use geographic keywords if you are trying to rank locally and attract local customers.
