Extent of linking to a complementary website

I'm building a video website that is going to complement an authority website i have in the same niche.

I will thus have two websites in the same niche, both with similar content.. just packaged differently (one is text... the other video)

How much can I link from my currently established website to the new video website?

I've seen Gawker and techcrunch link to other websites in their network. It would really help my visitors if I linked to my video website since it will be a different way of looking at the same content.

Would you think its advisable to have a sidebar link? I.e thus linking to my video website from ALL pages

I would use a sidebar link or on a Top header navigational menu that stays the same on each page. I would defiantly back-link to your video website especially in the same niche.

Try to host your new site on a separate IP address if possible - your cross domain linking will carry more weight if you do.

Exactly as James has said host your site on a diferrent IP then linking will be fine and untraceable that there both yours. I build my mini networks using this same structure.
