Do you link to your articles on other websites? And if so, why?

I don't link to my article in article directories ever...

However, I do link to my articles on other people's websites, for several reasons:

1) I only link to those people who have formatted my article nicely, and set up my links as I wanted them... If someone takes out the bold on my sub-heads, I will never link to that copy, because I want readers to not be underwhelmed by my article...

2) It does not matter to me how people find my website... That is the reason I do article syndication... I do it to get my articles and my links in front of people on the websites where they are already hanging out...

If they do not know my article exists, they probably will not be searching for it... So I want to take advantage of the fact that my target audience is using other people's website right now... And I want to siphon off some of that traffic for myself...

3) While it is nice to have people reading my article on my website, it is more important that they are reading my article, because the article is designed to get them to my sales page...

4) If my article is posted on an authority website, then it is to my benefit to link to that article there, because the reputation and credibility of the authority website rubs off on me...

5) When my article on a third-party website gains real link popularity, some of that link popularity will be passed to my website... Improving the overall ranking and authority of my sales page and website...

6) It is good karma... When someone publishes my article on their website, they have done me a favor... By building links to my article on their website, I am returning the favor -- giving back to them for giving to me...

Thanks Bill, very good advice. I have on occasions linked to my articles in article directories, but to be honest I have never even considered linking to my articles on other people's websites.

You have some great points there though so this is something I will seriously consider doing.

I build links to my articles on other sites, both article directories and sites that syndicate my articles.

I don't do it for every single article on the directories, but if someone else's article is on the first page of Google from Ezinearticles, for example, I'll do some link building to see if I can bump them off with mine.

As for articles on other sites, I'm the same way - I only link to articles that are formatted properly, on a half-decent site. If they've changed my article somehow, or the site is basically just a feeder site for articles on 100 different topics I don't bother.

I set up Google Alerts for my pen names and URLs so I get notified when Google indexes a new article. This makes it easy to find the articles when someone posts one on a new site.

I still get alerts for articles that I submitted to EZA five or six years ago on a fairly regular basis.
