Dear warriors

Is the number of search results in google, an indication of competition? I see for a key word, there are 10 million search results but the first page has few sites that have done good 'on page' optimization. or is it a smart idea to stick with keyword that have much less search results (somewhere around 250,000 hits)

Thanks

If you use the Firefox browser (recommended) use the seoquake addon and you'll be able to see the amount of backlinks a site has and how hard it'll be to compete for the search term. Use the results from the 1st page only, traffic drops off significantly after that. Onpage SEO is only part of it. You can also use TrafficTravis (free version) or MarketSamurai to get the info as well.

Most people use Google's results as they get the bulk of the traffic, but Seo Book Keyword Suggestion Tool gives the ORGANIC results for Yahoo and MSN as well (I like to crosscheck the results). If you're using Google's Adwords tool remember to set it to "exact match" and that the results tend to be inflated.

It also depends on the types of sites that are on the page.

    # of results means nothing

Your only competition are the first ten sites listed for the keyword

Analyze those sites and beat them

Usually keywords with a lot of results are often searched and there is a lot of competition.See what sites are in top results and how strong they are.

Not at all, this number has almost nothing to do with a competition rate, but just tells you how well the keyword phrase is targeted by online community.

What really matters is a "rate/number of search requests". You can get it from Google Trends. It really shows how hot is the topic.

To analyze the competition level, you can use seoquake plugin and:
    - AdWords Keyword Tool
    - Wordtracker
    - Overture
    - Yahoo! Search Marketing
    - SEO Book Keyword Tool

Number of search results is more or less just bragging rights for when you talk to people that don't know about SEO. I have a #3 and #9 position for 2 sites in the same keyword and the search results (exact) show 175,000,000 results. That sounds impressive if you've never done SEO or are very new to SEO. In reality, it wasn't too difficult to get those positions and I'm still working on the #9 to bring it right up with the other one. My only challenge in that keyword has been the #1 and #2 positions (it's one site with two pages ranking). It's really your best bet to look at the top 10 (or less) and see if you can beat them. None of the rest matter because very few people go past page 1.
