Google Places Question...

Hi guys
I've been really working on the SEO for the company that I work for to get it as high up as possible for a particular keyword, and on Friday I achieved this.
The page had been stuck at around number 11 in Google for a keyword in the UK (our target), and when I took over I got it up to 10, then 9, then 8, and then suddenly 4. And when I say 4, I mean it had jumped up into a Google Places position of which there were 5, A, B, C, D and E. We were E. I checked this on Saturday and it was still there at number 4 or E on Google Places if you will. It's now Sunday night and I checked again and we're back down to 8, which is of course disappointing, but there are now also only 4 Google Places A-D, and the E that we were occupying has disappeared. I have also found that when I search 'Pages From The UK', there are 5 places, of which we are still occupying E, but on 'the web', only 4 places and unfortunately I think that the default search is for 'the web' rather than 'the UK' even though that is where you would be searching from.
Can anyone explain why this happened or have any suggestions as to why it might have happened? Both such a dramatic change in a couple of days and also why I now find there's only A-D on Google Places.
