Who created this DMOZ/Yahoo "truism"?

I feel like it's SEO "common knowledge" that DMOZ and Yahoo Directory links are somehow magical--that they possess some kind of link authority that other links of the same attributes (PageRank, OBL, Domain Age, etc.) do not possess.
Where did this idea come from? And is there any actual evidence for it? Has Google ever come out and touched on the issue?
