Google Alerts aren't to improve your search results. You use them to get notified when something of interest is indexed, like your product, name, something of interest, etc.

For example, I have Google Alerts set up with the product name of my product (in my sig). Now I know when a new review page, article, etc., is indexed - including when some warez or sharing site has my product.

Google alerts do not increase rankings!...you can use it to get some fresh backlinks or beware of negative reviews rising up about your services if any.

I LOVE Google Alerts! I've got a couple set up for the "keywords" I'm ranking for. Just tips me off to new competition, new articles, if someone used one of my articles! Lol! I like it when a Yahoo! or AOL Answers or Google Groups shows up... Some uber easy ways to get relevant backlinks and stay on top of the competition.

I highly recommend for anyone doeing SEO/SEM/WEB Stuff!

Google alerts will not impact your rankings, what they will do is alert you to any conversations about your industry or products being monitored. I mainly use Google alerts for reputation monitoring, so if something is being said in a blog or forum about our products or services I can respond.
