About backlinks on forums

I apologize if this question has been asked before, but if it was a while ago, i suspect that the answer may have changed.

My question is, in terms of grabbing back links, is my time better spent using forums like this one and including them in my signature, which would mean many links per day, or

should I submit an article to a high PR database which gets me one backlink per day.

I am concerned that google is onto the forum approach, and article databases may be the way to go...or maybe I am wrong.

Is there a new approach that any of you are using?

Depends on your goals and your site.

For SEO purposes, articles are better because you can use multiple anchor texts and be on multiple sites while thats harder to do by just posting on 1 forum.

Forums signatures are great for targeted traffic and depending how active and helpful you are as a forum member they could do much better than articles.

But there's a bunch of variables to add so there's really no correct answer besides test them both and see what works better for your site.

You hit the nail right there! We must be helpful. One cannot just post on a forum for the heck of one more backlink as your reputation would be affected sooner or later.

When I post, I try to be as helpful as my knowledge and experience permits. I don't hold back. I try to be as much detailed as I can in my replies for the benefit of the community as a whole and not just one individual in particular.

Of course Google must know about backlinking in forums and simply would give a lower score on those backlinks.

Article sites are of much higher authority than forums since articles are reviewed by humans before being published online and therefore must yield a much higher backlink score! Perhaps 10x more!

So 1 article site backlink=10 forum backlinks in my opinion.

    Rachel,

There. We've solved that concern for you as it relates to this forum.

In general, it's my understanding that links from a forum, no matter how many, only count as one. I'm not at all certain of the truth of that statement (not my area of expertise), but it's the answer I've heard most from folks who seem to have some clue in the matter.

You also have the chance of getting sydicated with articles. One well-written article could net you quite a few back links if a lot of people pick it up and put on their site.

You are not going to hurt yourself with the forum approach. Just don't make it your only approach. Diversify your strategy.

As aaron said, Forums are great place to make backlinks. So you can find forums which related to your niche and put a signature with targeted keywords. You better to fins phpbb and smf forums where you find more Dofollow backlinks.
Nowadays Article submission and High PR blog commenting also considered as powerful backlinks.
