3 Websites same ip causes low ranking

Hello,

I have 3 chinese restaurants on the same IP and as a result only 2 of the 3 are getting a first page listing and when one moves up, the other moves down.

Will this be fixed if I change the hosting so they all have a different IP?

Also, any idea if I should change the whois data as they are all registered to the same address(the company I work for)?

Thanks,

Gordon

  • I doubt that is the issue. I have multiple sites on the same IP. That happens all over the world on nearly every web server. How many people and companies have a one-for-one website to IP address? I doubt very many.
  • With the same IP it really causes your rankings to go down because of the competition.
  • Ranking going down because websites on same server i.p?

Try telling that to the 500,000 websites owners on Bluehost Hosting on shared hosting and the same i.p.

  • Thanks for your replys. But I don't think most of you are understanding the question, maybe it's the way I asked it.

The 3 companies are competing for the same term 'chinese restaurant(with local modifier). They also have the same IP address and whois information. On bluehost not everyone is fighting over "chinese restaurant" they are targeting different terms.

Its would understand what you are saying if one was competing for chinese restaurant, and one was competing for italian.
  • Hello Kay,

The content is unique on the 3 sites although the businesses are the same. As it is a brick and mortar business they are being ranked using Google places results(larger 7 pack merged with organic listing).

I understand that normally a shared IP would not matter, but these companies are in close proximity, and sell the same product on the same IP.

Also as I mentioned before. When one of these companies moves up, the other has a dramatic fall. Google is not serving both listings at once, it can vary from day to day, but when one of the companies rise up the rankings, the other one falls dramatically.

This is what has led me to believe the IP may be causing as maybe Google doesn't like serving closely related brick on mortar pages results on the same page if they have similar attributes with the same IP. I know that people are saying Google wouldn't do this, but who actually knows??
  • Here you will see people hosting multiple domains, selling the same product but they have done so on a different ip. So obviously they believe IP has an impact. http://www.warriorforum.com/adsense-...ur-advise.html

    • I don't think your conclusion is correct. BUT - if you are convinced, move one of the sites to a different host and see if that changes anything.

That will tell you if the shared IP is the problem or not.

  • I pay extra to hostgator so they give me different IPs. Not sure if it helps, considering the the IPs are the same number except for the last digit.

    123.432.12.122
    123.432.12.123
    123.432.12.124
  • I have never in life have heard sites in same host with the same ip(range) will cause problem on ranking similar keywords and i doubt this. I will be over this thread.

    • Update

Two days ago I switched the sites so they were on 3 different IP's. All 3 sites are now on the first page - 2 of them sites are showing as merged places results(organic result with places info).

I will keep you all updated, if all three restaurants stay on the first page, I would say changing host probably had an impact.
