Hahaha, Steve. Indeed, the steps you mentioned seem to be very very easy but, there are many questions:
- how do you promote your blog
- how do you do seo
- how do you research for keywords
etc..
So, if you really want to help someone, answer these questions. We all know that in order to make money on internet via blogging you need to setup a blog and promote it. Really...

Articles and Keywords

So I need around 60 - 70 articles for this blog and I have 7 categories. This means I will aim to create 10 articles per category. Obviously some categories will have more scope for articles than others so I will probably write more articles for the popular categories.

Starting with one of my categories and I will use "Southern Europe Cruises" as an example. Rather than just fire up a keyword tool and look for derivatives of southern european cruises, I will do some brainstorming first. I will do a search on google for southern european cruises and research the sites that come up and make notes. Here are a few ideas I found in less than a minute.

*Mediterranean cruises
*Canary Islands
*Greek Islands
*Black Sea Cruises
*Sardinia

I will now research those keywords on cruise related forums and find out any questions that are asked about those keywords or articles that are currently available to read. If there are any recurring topics then they will make for a good article. In this example I decided a few good article titles would be

*Cruising the Mediterranean
*Mediterranean Cruises On a Budget
*The Best Mediterranean Destinations

I hope you get the idea. I now fire up a keyword tool and look up related keywords to the main keyword phrase to include in my article.

*carnival mediterranean cruise
*cruise in the mediterranean
*discount mediterranean cruises

to name but a few...

The point of adding the extra keywords is to reinforce the topic of the article and to find as many esoteric terms. This gives your article some authority which will eventually help in getting indexed and also hopefully more search terms. Don't be afraid to use your own keywords that pop out of your own imagination either. If you have a keyword tool that can find LSI keywords then use that also..

Once you have your article titles and keywords then go ahead and start writing or get a freelance writer to do this for you. This is what I will be doing for most of the articles.

If you are writing them yourself then find articles that are already out there and basically just rewrite them.. Don't plagiarize, that just wouldn't be right but certainly use the main points and make your own articles. Aim for 500 word articles and never stuff your main keyword into the article more than 2%.

Oh well, time to start writing!

Just read your reply to my earlier post. It wasn't made to deter the project but rather to stack up the odds of success on your side rather then against it. Just like in stock trading you trade WITH the trend not AGAINST it.

Q1) Are you going to use a service like uniquearticlewizard to start building one way relevant links to your blog?

Q2) Are you going to be using social bookmarking and rss feed aggregators for traffic and links also?

Just to clarify...

You're not trying to make every article target a keyword that contains "...European Cruises" (ie Discount Mediterranean Cruises) but you do want every category to contain that phrase (ie Southern European Cruises), correct?

Thanks again Steve.

3. Used google's keyword tool and KWbrowse to find some related terms and sub phrases to European cruises.

I ended up choosing 7 different categories for my WP blog based on this research.

Now that I have my categories I can dig into each category to see what people are talking about and need questions answered about in that particular category. I will aim to turn these questions into article titles. More on that in my next post...

No problem, I realise you were making a very valid point. In answer to your questions, no I will not be using any services for backlinks and yes, I will be using the other techniques you mention as part of my promotional efforts.

"Southern European cruises" will be just one category out of the seven I have chosen. With respect to the titles of the articles that will appear under this particular category, they don't have to have southern european cruises as a phrase in the title at all.

The point I am making is that rather than look at this from an SEO point of view, look at it in a human way. Ask yourself, what would the phrase Southern European Cruises encompass? A human would answer Italian cruises or Cruises around the Greek islands, a keyword tool might say south europe cruises, cruises in southern europe.. Silly examples I know but the point I am making is that everything about this site is going to be about creating something a human being with an interest in cruses in Europe will love..

It does involve more research than the normal push button techniques but it does work. You are giving google what they want, i.e. a quality, easily navigable (is that a word?) and humans get something good to read. You will get rewarded by good indexing and consequently good ads displayed and finally good clicks resulting in good money.

One final point, when looking at the keywords in your titles just fire up the old google keyword tool and see if the phrase get's searches and has a good CPC associated with it. Also check the competition in google. Just let these numbers give you an indication that you will get some traffic and good ads.

Mr. Crooks, My first post on this forum and I gotta tell you, I am compelled to add my two cents here. I love what you are trying to do, and have been waiting for someone to pony up and prove that this can be done. So many times I have heard it can, read about how it was done, but when challenged, the gurus were always "too busy" to put their money where their mouths were.

In fact in just reading the first few posts from you I have learned more about internet marketing than after 3days - doing my current course (which is complete with software and video!!)

Kudos and I will be intently checking up on the status of your success. I may even take the time to follow you "note for note" (as we say in da muzic buziness) to see if I can get a nice little ad-sense site working out for me. At least then I could prove to my girlfriend that I'm not wrong when I say it is possible to make money with just adsense. :-)

Thanks for your kind words Peter and I hope you will realise that a good work ethic will always make you money in the long run. Not wanting to take sides but I kind of agree with your girlfriend though.. Although this challenge is purely about adsense, I want you and eveyone to know that it should be just one source of income in the big picture. Putting all your eggs in one basket is a risky game in my opinion. Get yourself a good adsense income and then a good affiliate income, then create your own products..etc..etc.. I am getting way ahead of myself now.

LOL, you are getting way ahead of yourself there Steve Still, it's good advice not to put all your eggs in one basket.

At the moment my adsense income is only about $2.50 per month (pathetic I know... I'm too ashamed to even put the site in my signature file)

My first attempt at making money online was PTR programs (paid to read) where you earn a fraction of a cent to view a webpage. The earning potential is pathetic unless you can refer a whole bunch of other users and it's no good for promoting affiliate products as the conversion rate sucks.

Hi Steve

Navigable is a lot better than navigatable

When you say you will have adsense in a sidebar will you be putting it below the navigation on the left sidebar or creating a right hand side bar.

Enjoying the thread and copying you to the letter - except for the niche topic.

Hi Ken,

Yes, you are right navigable is better.

I will be adding it on the left sidebar but in my experience it doesn't make much difference whether it is left or right.

I am busy writing articles at the moment and getting my ghostwriter to write a bunch of them as well. I will get my first batch of articles ready to post soon and then we are all systems go..

Hello again Steve, sorry to leave the impression that I was looking just at ad-sense alone. In fact I have a whole network of sites, products, and some e book ideas and I plan/hope/pray to make a fairly decent living online through techniques I'm learning here and elsewhere.

My girlfriend and I have always argued about the ad-sense thing. She insists that it is impossible to make decent money by just using ad-sense, without having a product or other revenue streams on a site. I've wanted to attempt the very thing you are undertaking for around a year so I could say " told you so" :-). Only thing is that until now I haven't had the time (or knowledge) to pull it off. At any rate, I am cheering for ya and hope you can reach your goal.

Like Steve said it is good to diversify and NOT put your eggs in one basket. That being said there is 100% examples of real people with real incomes from Adsense alone. There is NO question about that. We are talking $1,000 a day with Adsense income alone. Its all well documented. But like is being said here you need to spread you risk out with Affiliate Products, Article Marketing, PPC, MLM etc..etc..

You dont want to build up an Adsense income of over $20,000 a month (which I personally know several people who do ) and have Google decide to all of the sudden ban your Account !! You need something to fall back on.

I just had an email from a customer who bought my ebook recently and asked me a good question which I thought I would pass on to you.

He basically wanted to know about how his brand new niche blog will be able to compete with some very well established, high PR websites that fill all the top spots on google for a competitive keyword phrase?

It is a difficult thing to achieve but is also very possible if you stick with it and promote regularly and above all, remain patient. It is also a bit of a smoke screen to the bigger picture though. The bigger picture is about getting searches for as many diverse and niche/longtail keywords as possible. The cumulative effect of getting indexed and ranked for these more "longtail" keywords is you get a more targeted bunch of visitors and also added together the number of searches will exceed the broader keyword phrases anyway.

The other great thing about getting indexed for longtails is that eventually google will see your site as an authority and reward you with ranking eventually leading to more broader keywords getting indexed and ranked.

That's great thread Steve. I am not sure whether you can reach $100 in 3 months with a new website. In my opinion, it is difficult to do that if we don't out source the task and spend some money on advertising. and I don't think a newbie can do it.

Hi Peter, I am just in the process of writing and getting articles written now and the blog will be live within a day or two with a few articles to start with. I am also in the process of getting a blog up and running to track the progress of this challenge. It should go live either tonight or tomorrow..

Very courageous! Finally something different than pure theory.

I have a question Steve, are you doing Posts or Pages? What is the difference? Is it better to do one than the other? Please explain for us newbies! Thanks so much and I will be following this the whole way!!

In this project I will be using posts but only because I have had a lot of success recently using them. I have nothing against pages and I don't know whether they offer any advantages over posts or not. I do have blogs that do well composed entirely of pages but for some reason posts get indexed quicker in google in my experience.

The difference is simple, posts get listed on your blog in reverse order, i.e. newest first and older posts get pushed further down. A page on the other hand is a static page that always has the same URL in just the same way a traditional HTML site does. In fact you can think of pages as turning a blog into a static site.

A post is also contained within a category and also date stamped. The URL can be made more SEO friendly by changing permalinks but more on that later. A page doesn't have a category as such.

Just to clarify for those who may get confused, a Post's URL will always stay the same as well. Your URL will never change unless you change your permalink structure.

$100/day in AdSense is my goal as well. I'm following this and looking forward to your traffic generation techniques. I had 2 sites ready for this which I add 1 article each everyday.

Pages are great, and definitely have their place for certain material, but, If you plan on using RSS, pages won't show up in your feed.

Great thread Steve!

Good Luck with the $100 goal!
