Hi, Did a search on domains versus subdomains and see no answer so here's my qustion: I use Site5 to host my domains and 1and1.com to register domain names. 1and1 charges $8.99 and a special now for $6.99 so let's say $8/year. I want to register 500 names so that's $4,000/year. OR Can I just register and host one domain, call it xyz.com and create 500 subdomains - total cost is $8/year? e.g. cars.xyz.com boats.xyz.com How will Google look at this? Will it be the same as: cars-xyz.com boats-xyz.com This is a very important question for me - I don't know the answer and maybe some here do. Thanks for any feedback, |

Thank you Steve! I'm following your progress on this Adsense adventure.... Also for Cash Wiz - I can't remember where I recently read this but I seem to remember reading that Google was starting to view domains with hyphenated names and subdomains with greater scrutiny for quality. |

Hi Steve - am following your progress on your way to $100 a day! I have a question. Do you (or anyone) know a reliable way to get another Adsense account when you've already been banned? I had an Adsense account and I was a member of a group that did Adwords/Adsense arbitrage. The idea was to buy cheap clicks and send to pages optimized for expensive clicks. This actually worked quite well and we all got quite good at it and made money. But, Google suddenly decided that it didn't like arbitrage and banned us from Adsense (but not Adwords). I tried applying for another account and was immediately refused. If anyone has any experience of this I would be grateful for advice. Thanks, Sarah |

What if my blogs have been up and running for a few months WITHOUT consistent traffic? Should I go ahead and pull adsense off until I build the traffic up to at least 100 a day? Put another way, I have about 14 blogs total, with at least half of those with little to no traffic and little to no Adsense clicks. I have decided to concentrate on four blogs over the next 90 days and work as hard as I can to promote them to increase traffic, backlinks, etc.... Okay, I am editing because I see you already answered my question, but why would some recommend putting adsense on at the very beginning? (I am part of a niche blogging course and she recommends putting adsense on from the beginning.) What happens when you put adsense on from the beginning instead of waiting for traffic, indexing, links? Thank you for any help. I have been following this thread from the beginning and am determined to make this work. April

While I don't have any actual proof I do believe that you can't beat a single domain per site. I have had success using subdomains but I do have to try harder it seems to get indexed and ranked for them.

Well, officially once you are banned then that is it I am afraid. However, you could start a business and have an adsense account in the name of that business or a spouse or family member could open one for you. You should never put your name, bank account or old websites forward to open a new account though.

They look at this as a spamming technique and will usually discount it or deindex the domain. This was something that was commonly done about 4-5 years ago but Google caught on to it and started applying penalties to the practice. 10, 20 or so subdomains should be in most cases but a few hundred might present problems.

Great thread, a contributing factor as to why I joined WarriorForum. Even if you don't make your goal, it's almost as much fun reading someone else's journey as doing it yourself.

I only found this thread today and ive been reading up as much as poss. I made my first wp blog - call it siteA in early January after getting a bit sucked in by Jeff johnsons seo wp. Since then I bought a new domain and now have created 25 subdomains out of it - siteB, each with their own wordpress blog. My plan was 100 blogs that make a $1 a day each - the spam route i spose. To confirm your point, it just doesnt seem to work doing the subdomains . SiteA went to pr3 in about a month from nothing other than one link on a (niche related) pr4 site i have. I know pr means little really but it shows that google accepted the blog. All my blogs use a feed that posts 3-4 articles a day from syndicate kahuna. SiteB has nothing other than greybar or pr0. Last week or so SiteA has ranked no1 for a keyword. It gets up to 20 hits a day and makes me about 12cents in adsense earnings a day. yes WOW! The other ones to my dismay dont seem to want to budge as far as google is concerned. I just checked the internal linking in webmasters for one of them (i added about 10 in webmaster tools) and its counting the subdomains links as internal. So I could be wrong but I think ive proved that your right in the subdomains thing. Wrong move, waste of time. It amazes me how google gets it right when its supposed to be automated. SiteA IS much better. I paid out over £100 for a custom design and it gets loads of nice comments. But the other 25 blogs are all from the same syndicate kahuna feeds - essentially you could say - the same content as siteA. I am new to blogs, slighlty less new to static pages seo but the most important thing if i reakon that youve highlighted is the niche and keyword research before you do anything else. I made a site rank no1 for quite a few keywords finally after years and it doesnt make me any money. Wrong niche, wrong keywords boohoo. I have to keep trying. I think youve inspired a lot of people, well done. Its great to see a pro have a go and struggle, so much nicer than being fed a load of rubbish. ... if i could ask, is bookmarking demon good? I wanted to get it after reading you using it but alas you have to pay for it. I have been using onlywire the last few weeks. Ive read bad things about onlywire but it just makes good sense and i love using it. I must have made about 400 backlinks in about 20 mins when i first used it |

So if I am using the Super Adsense Themes and go in and remove Adsense and Publisher ID off of my blogs, do I then also have to go into my adsense account and remove the domains from my account area...(showing my real noob colors here...), maybe this is a silly question, but want to make sure I do it right.

Hi CashWizard I have to respectfully disagree with Steve on this one. My experience of subdomains has actually been very good. I have one site with six subdomains and my subdomains are ranking higher than the main domain is, despite the fact that the main domain has almost 200 backlinks. I have one subdomain that has only three backlinks and one stumbleupon link yet it receives over 50% of the total traffic for the whole site. Subdomains are great for allowing us to add keywords to our domain. If we have a keyword rich domain name and then add further keywords in a subdomain then it can be extremely effective. My experience has been that the order of effectiveness for keywords in domains is:

Since my last post - also see this, just found it in Matt Cutts Blog, in reply to a question on subdomains (Matt Cutts is the non official voice for Google) Matt Cutts Said, December 10, 2007 @ 10:48 am “Which one is to be expected to be indexed and show on Google first; subdomain or subdirectory?” Harith, to the best of my knowledge neither one has an advantage for crawling/indexing first. There's a lot more in his blog on subdomains and sub directories and the merits of each.

Thanks for sharing this with us. The first thing that came to mind when I read this is the actual question that was asked... Which will be indexed first? (subdomain or subdirectory) and Matt's answer is that neither is more likely. But the question isn't asking about actual ranking... rather WHEN it will be indexed. The second thing of course is the age of the post... December 10, 2007... a lot can change in 15 months... especially with google! Of course, this doesn't mean that the information isn't valid... simply that it doesn't answer the question about ranking. It's excellent information to remember... which is why I thank you for sharing it.

I found this when searching for info on subs and Google views on them: However, in Google's webmaster guidelines: Particularly, "Don't create multiple pages, subdomains, or domains with substantially duplicate content. This may be the reason why Google does take action on some subs. Many people copy basic stuff like copywright and About Us from the main domain. Just a thought. |

Hi Steve, I have only recently found this thread and I am very interested in your progress with this. I have read a lot of the posts here and have skimmed a lot as well (wow, well over 1000 posts here). With your most recent post on your The $100 A Day Challenge blog (100buckschallenge.com) on March 4th, it looks like you are 15-20% of the way there already, which I count as a success. I mean a consistent $15+ per day, in a few months is remarkable. I am sure you will reach your goal and I will continue to follow your progress, and I wish all the best for you. Kevin |

This is interesting because I have 5 adsense websites and ahve just about given up on them because in total they earn around $10 per month and I'm paying about $35 per month just to keep them there. Go for it Steve - I'll be watching closely. Dave |

Someone should really point out the obvious to the new guys here, so I'll bite the bullet. You cannot place adsense on a wordpress.com blog - you can only do so by paying for your own hosting - on either wordpress.org or by uploading wordpress to a hosted account like hostgator (I recommend hostgator) The other option for using adsense on blogs is to go to blogspot and use their system - if you either cannot afford or are too intimidated by starting your own domain hosted account. Blogspot is OK, I use it for a few blogs - but it can be tempermental and personally I don't like the idea of someone else having that kind of control over my material. |

Nope. Your earnings from adsense are the same regardless of where you place your code. And btw there are no stupid questions when it comes to IM Every one of us here has had the same questions at one point or another when we started out.

Steve, it looks like your traffic is hovering around the same number now. You could look at it and say, traffic is steady. Or, you could also say that it has hit a wall. I would be interested to see how you take it to the next level and smash through the wall. I have three blogs right now, with vastly differing amount of content, ranging from 150 posts down to 50 posts. But, they all seem to be getting just about the same amount of traffic from Google. So, it doesn't appear to me to be content that is driving it or even domain age. One of them was launched a year later than the other two. I think it comes down to backlinking and promotion. I am beginning to come to the conclusion that backlinking is almost more important than content. |

Indeed. Although the better your content the more likely you are to get unsolicited backlinks (over time). Either way you can speed things up by going out and finding backlinks rather than waiting for them, but again the better your content the more likely it is that people will agree to link to it.
