Yes does anyone have direct evidence that LSI improves that ranking of a page in google? Anyone know of a test that was conducted to try to gauge whether LSI plays a role?

Last I heard from 2 very trusted sources was that LSI wasn't really in effect or an issue. They both conducted extensive tests and concluded LSI wasn't a factor in SEO.

Are these sources on the internet or people that you know from forums or something like that.

jaggyjay, ya, where could we find these studies?

This is one area I'm looking into. I just came across this website: Internet Marketing Tips & Newsletter. Haven't really gone through it that much, but this guy seems to have done a lot of studies on LSI and he's written a few documents related to it. Seems like an expert in this area. Something good to check out.

Well, people often misunderstand why you would care about LSI. The purpose isn't to make it easier to rank for a single keyphrase, it's to make your content rank for lots and lots of different, long tail, related keywords.

So for example, I write an article about Blue Widgets. It ranks #5 for Blue Widgets.

Now, imagine that I figure out that anybody reading about Blue Widgets also probably cares about Red Widgets, or Widget Durability or Blue Widgets vs. Green Widgets...So I go back through my article and weave in some LSI keywords accordingly.

    What happens?

Well, now I'm ranking for all kinds of long tail phrases, like: "Blue widgets or green widgets", "how durable is a blue widget" and "are blue widgets more durable than red widgets".

It's a common misconception - The point of LSI isn't to make it easier to rank for just ONE keyword, it's to make your content more relevant for tens and hundreds of RELATED keywords. The result is more chances to rank for a phrase per piece of content, or in other words, more traffic.

Yes, It does really help a lot. I have few sites with articles with LSI in it and some without LSI in it. Google Favours those with LSI on them and with proper on-page optimization as well.

LSi is not in conflict with keyword targeting. You can write a traditional article that targets a specific keyword and include LSI keywords as well. I tend to agree with Big Mike (despite his ****ty software), that the future of the web is going to be less about keywords and more about relevancy which means you don't want to keyword stuff, you want to synonym stuff.

Can you use a plugin like "incoming terms" or a "keyword cloud" or must the LSI keywords be spread around the article. Please dont take guesses. Answer only if you know. It is obvious that someone taking a guess would say spread it around the page.

There is a good WSO from Peter "Website Launch BluePrint" that really explains on-page optimization and LSI. To be frank with you, its a lot more than what you think. He has explain them all really very well and to rank your site, it is not only LSI but your site have to do proper On-page-Optimization, Proper website structure and also website content that google sees as very relevant to what the users are searchin in google.

Sorry, I can't reply to your PM cos of my Post counts.
