pages with no backlinks to page

say you find a keyword, half the pages in top ten are ranking with a subpage (i.e nonkeyworddomain.com/keywords-here.html) with no/few backlinks pointing to it but it isnt really optimized for the keyword.

however, its ranking because the root domain has thousands of backlinks and is a respected site thats been around a while, but the page itself isnt optimized/little backlinks.

would it be easy to out rank the site because the page has few backlinks/little optimization, or does the amount of backlinks of the actual root domain/authority of the root domain matter?

I would think if its ranking for a keyword it isnt aiming for, has little backlinks to the actual page and none with the keyword in anchor text and is ranking purely because of the root domain/internal linking that it would be quite easy, but I could be wrong.

opinions warriors?

Well It wont matter if the number of backlink is little/few as long as this backlinks are high quality one. It is better to divide the root where you want to link so you can optimize them all. Link to the main url and internal pages of your website would be easy as long as you keep content original and high quality.

Just because the competition doesn't have external backlinks pointing at the internal page doesn't mean the ranked page doesn't have quality internal links from other internal pages.

Wikipedia does this a lot, few external links pointing at some ranked pages.

Authority is authority, doesn't matter If it's internal or external links.

      Aye, very true.

But if you had EMD domain with some quality backlinks and properly optimized, how hard would it to outrank vs a page with little backlinks externally, not optimized but ranking well due to internal links on an aged domain?

      Should it be best avoided?

      Thanks

It should be easy enough to outrank such a site if you know what you're doing. I have done it many times. In fact, it's one of the things I look for when evaluating the competition.
