Article marketing best practices

Hi guys, I'm new here but I have been lurking this forum quite a while now. I'm new to the whole seo game but have done a fair amount of research the last couple of months. Recently I have launched an e-commerce site and want to get some decent rankings in google. Currently I am ranking at around 90 in the SERP's for the most competitive keyword in my industry and want to move to the top 50. I'm thinking about article marketing to build links. I ordered a couple of articles on elance, included the contextual links and now I'm ready to publish. My question is, where do I go from here? Do is just submit the articles to random article submission sites, can I publish the same article on multiple article sites (that would be duplicate content?), and after I published them, what do I do next? Should I cross link the articles? Ping certain services? Basicly I'm looking for some best practices today (2012) for building contextual one-way backlinks trough article marketing.

I would suggest that you not publish the same article a bunch of different places. You might want to look into "spun" articles as that essentially allows you to create dozens of different unique versions of the same article.
