The question is very general, as other people have pointed out. Another thing to note is that most forums these days are not do-follow and so they are not of as much benefit as many people think.

That is not to say that all forum links are useless. If they are non-spammy links, they will definitely bring you benefit. I prefer to use forums to get leads and generate interest in my products and websites rather than for SEO related purposes. This is a great way to attract relevant, interested traffic from non-search engine sources.

I know from my own little bits of keyword research, when I'm "assessing the SEO-quality of the competition" by checking out the backlinks of the first few sites in Google's SERP's that if I find one with something like 100 backlinks all from decent-looking relevant sites, and almost nothing else, that may be a pretty tall order for me to beat, whereas I can typically overtake sites with "obvious automated, mass-backlinking" (of the "forum profile"/"article directory" type of backlinks) very quickly indeed, even if they have tens of thousands of backlinks.

Depends on the forums you are building links on. If you choose good quality forums which allow signature do follow links, you can create signatures linking back to you website and place GENUINE suggestions.

Make sure to put relevant postings helping other people out. If you don't do that you run the risk of being removed from the forum, and you are less likely to be visited from any of the other members.

As just about everyone else has said- don't focus on forums.

They can still help, but not nearly as much as they used to.

Actually I think it will be wrong if you use forum only for backlinks building. You have to actively use forum for help others & also for learn from others.

I agree with Yasiryar. Forums are a great way to get opt-ins, sell products, or drive traffic. For SEO purposes you need to post so many times that it is almost a waste of time. You can find software to easily automate this process or post on higher PR sites (which is better for SEO anyways).

Make sure to check if they have dofollow though or else your backlink means nothing. Also, put the link your signature not in the comment.

Agree with everyone on quality of links. Even .edu or .gov links lose their value if they are beaten down with spam.

If you are posting links on forums for SEO backlinking purposes, maybe not the most effective way to do so.

Do you want to use forums just for backlink purpose or do you want visitors as well, if you are looking for backlink purpose only than you have to find relevant forum for what you are promoting like warrior forum, if you are promoting any online business product or method than geting backlinks from warrior and digitalpoint forum is worth because they are relevant..

I don't look for PR or no-follow, I look for relevant and that's what quality involves, in my Google webmaster account no-follows are also showing in my account as well, so if I am targeting only Google to get ranked and it is showing in my google webmaster account than now you can understand no-follow is not so important.. Forum commenting is helpful if you are doing niche related and high traffic forum

It depends on the quality of the forum. If you choose for example WF, it is one of the best forums online that will help you rank great for your website. By the way it is better also to use related forums to your niche (the niche of the website you want to rank for!)

I find it funny how coclced up some people think, a forum is a community to share with like minded people on a topic as it's basis of being, yet reading 99% of the posts here the very first concern is what can I take, where is my link, what's my juice power.

Non of it is even related to the purpose of the forum and if people's only intention is me, me and more me then its best that they move on and do not join the forum in the first place, leading to a good and solid community's that are not filled full of useless junk posts where it's purpose is just to spam links.

Finding active niche forums is easier said than done. I've only found a few in my field but am also on a number of SEO forums as there are more of them. For me it a good diversion from my daily tasks and if I get a link as well that's great. Most of the well moderated forums are nofollow but that has never been a consideration for me anyway.

So I was searching for "Forum backlinks" on Google and I got here. Here's my case:

I got three new minisites now live. I've started making backlinks for the first site mainly from article submissions. I have around 15 indexed backlinks, one half of these are from AMR submissions.

Now, I am planning on taking a new set of backlinks from related forums. I have around a 100 of related forums and I have located the thread posts with PR. So I have myself now specific forum threads/pages that have the ff:

1. Relevancy to my site
2. PR 1+ (since my sites are still new so I'm happy of getting PR 1)
3. DoFollow

Do you think this is a good idea for minisites? The first site was just launched last March and I am putting the signature links this week to about a 50 since I made some quality comments last week. The basics of signature links they said is to make a comment, quality comment, then leave it for 7 days. After 7 days has passed, inject the signature links so the moderators will not flagged your account.

So is this method good enough for new minisites or should I focus more on quality article submissions and web 2.0 sites? What's the catch here?

Forum backlinks brings minimal link juice to your site. No point spamming the forum with useless junk replies and hoping to rank high in the search engines.
