Google states that "speed matters"

One of the first questions I asked when I joined this forum was if the speed of page loads affects Google rank. Most people seemed to think that it doesn't. Yesterday Google had an article on the Webmaster Central Blog about a new module they have developed for Apache. The module has been in development since 2012 but is now out of Beta. I thought it was interesting that in the first sentence it says, "speed matters". In the third paragraph, "In fact, page speed is one of the signals in search ranking and ad quality scores."

Not trying to say I told you so. Just thought that was interesting.

I was under the impression that it has always mattered as well....whoever told you it didn't, did not know what they were talking about!

Known fact to those who know what they are doing.. Little known fact to idiots or those who do not investigate every possible way to improve their business.

I don't know where you got your most people from - probably hung out with the wrong crew - but speed of your site is old news. We have known that for a year or two.

        Site speed is old news.

When you ask questions around here, you have to keep an eye on things like sig. spammer comments (usually random crap). Sometimes those guys will junk up a thread.

Speed matters but so does quality. Once you start on things like reducing the file size of image files, i.e. compression, then you lose a bit of the quality. In the days of increasing internet speeds it shouldn't matter so much. So what do you choose - quality images or faster load times?

I think speed matters more than site owners - especially bloggers - like to admit. I've left many sites before they finished loading as 10-20 seconds is a long time for a site visitor to wait for your site. There are other sites and the visitor (like me) will move on.

    Hi,

In some way, page load speed really affects traffic. Regardless if Google considers this important or not, when your page loads slow, people will eventually leave your site.

Hi Page speed does matter and your site should load in 3 seconds or less otherwise it is penalized by google. Go to this free site to test your site speed GTmetrix | Website Speed and Performance Optimization
