Google and Directory Submissions?

Directories still work well, but not the ones that have been spammed to death by typical IM'ers. I only use ones with a strict moderation process (Dmoz) or that you have to pay in order to have your submission reviewed.

Thanks Mike ya I do this for clients so I will not pay to get a listing in a directory but what I will do for now on is only submit my clients to those free directories that say they have a moderation in place.

If you avoid the paid ones, you are missing out on some of the best ones.

BOTW and Yahoo Business are the most expensive ones at about $135 and $299/yr respectively. Most of the other ones range from $10-50/yr.

With the free ones, you generally are going to be limited to a PR 0 link. With a lot of the paid ones, you can get PR 4,5, and 6 links.

Right I understand that but I am not going to pay out of my pocket unless a client is willing to pay but I can purpose this to some of my clients especially the ones that want to rank for highly competitive keyword phrases.

kickmoney is there something wrong with an SEO person trying to find out what other SEO people are doing? I dont care how good you think you are I am sure there comes a time when you want to find out what others are doing and this is what this forum is for so for you to ask me what kind of 2bit operation am I running is not only insulting but kinda dumb on your part. Like I said this is a forum for sharing and finding out strategies that others are using and ya I think I covered your answer to your question.

Directory submission sites are still effective but I suggest that you prioritize high ranking sites for your backlinking.

One of my competitors purely uses directory submissions to rank sites.

What is really annoying thought is I spent a couple of days reverse enginerring a few of his sites to see how and when he had dropped the links etc and put together my own plan of action based on that.

But when I did it, it didn't rank ^^ To this day he is still doing the same thing but it just doesn't work for me.

MathewWoodward did you as far as you know do it exactly the same way as your competitor? Maybe you missed a step or something he did that you didnt do?

I'm seen the same exact thing. Did you check to see if they are using the directories as just the first tier of links and there are more links pointing at the directory listings themselves? Also, in one case of competitor analyses, I found tons of directory links, but also some high PR 301 redirects. I suspect the directories were just there to throw people off about the high PR redirects.

I also preferred Directory Submission and its still working whereas directory submission take some time for approval but directory very helpfull for your keyword but whenever you doing directory submission so please choose only niche directory.......

Ya vickyk I think that is the way to go like if your niche or your clients niche is coin dealer or coin collecting try to find directories that only allow coin dealers and collectors to be listed I agree that is the way to go and I am going to do that for all my clients.

We generally use high quality directory websites only, but we always prefer a free one rather than paid submission. We analyze the website first to check the quality so in future there will be no issue due to the submission. Always try to find the contact form in the directory so in future if you want to modify the details or want to delete your listing then you can easily do it.

Big directories and those that have quality layout seem to work LITTLE. Not as much as in the past...
A few good editorial links will have more impact - based on my experience.

So if you want to submit, make sure:
-you choose a directory that has decent PR flowing even 3-4 clicks from their main page (the ones that lose PR after 1-2 clicks aren't worth bothering with)
-don't submit to "link list"-type directories, those are mere linkfarms
-don't buy more than 5-10 directory links and personally I wouldn't buy more than 1 per month...
-make sure your other link-obtaining efforts are given more attention to and directories are just a secondary tactic

There can be some other factors that go into it. For example, I have seen some directories where if you do not pay for your listing, the link is nofollow. There are also some directories that add your new listing at the bottom of the page instead of the top. So even though the category might be a PR 4 page, you are on page 3 which is PR 0.

Also if they are buying "featured listings" and you are not, that usually keeps them at the top of the page. Location of the link makes a difference.

I know I dislike iSnare but their list of directories is pretty solid. 2010 and 2011 you only needed article directory marketing, now you need to mix articles with other linking options.

I did a forensic analysis of one of my competitors who had suddenly leaptfrog past everyone and he had made use of directories As an experiment I added my links on each of his chosen directory and bang i was dropped from page 1 to page 10. The site used to get thousands of hits and then was reduced to tens of hits and have now only recovered to hundred of hits. My competitor survived Panda, Penguin and EMD and that particular site of mine has a lot of content had links from authority sites in addition to these directory links. My anchor links were diversified and he had used 3 anchor links spread over 50 sites.

Guy had no other links beside directories and I put link on the same directories with even more diversified anchor links and I get shot down. Couldn't figure that one out and have since then avoided directories less than PR3.

jfambrini same has happened to me with my clients we do nothing but white hat backlinking, 100% original content article submissions, blog comment backlink all within a clients niche and almost all my clients before were ranking page one top five with many in the number one or two spot then Google came out with this new crap and bang over night almost all were shot way down and some blown totally off the radar I cant figure it out either.

Directories are still good, but you have to be very picky when selecting them. As a general rule, avoid all directories that seem part of a network of other directories. Also, avoid ANY directory that says it is "SEO Friendly".

Good question, I’ve seen a lot of confusion about this topic and I want to be as clear as I can about it; there is no magical list of quality directories out there. There are, however a few guidelines that you can keep in mind when doubting about the quality of a directory. Pay attention to the following;

1) Does the directory demand a reciprocal link before they accept your submission? If they do, it’s a sign that something fishy might be up.

2) Perform a simple snippet search. Take a random entry, perform a “quotation” search on Google with a random sentence in the entry, are there hundreds of directories with the exact same sentence? You do the math!

Apart from these 2 simple giveaways, remember the value of moderation and specialisation. Directories with a clear niche or with a very active moderator are for more likely to have value. Also, the SEOmoz list of directories is pretty up to date and good.

Meh the cost benefit with directories just isn't worth it at the end of the day. I don't get paying a ton of money a year for a link that gets stuck on a low PR page. Sure, nice diversity, but comeon its a directory link.

You can get way better links that actually pass real value for about the same price. Why bother with directories?

If you are doing it right, outside of BOTW, you don't spend money for directory links that end up on PR 0 pages. You inspect the directory first, figure out what page your link will end up on, and then check out the PR of that page. You make a decision to buy based on that.
