Hello folks,

I would like to hear from folks here if there has been any improvement in their site rankings since the Jan.17 drubbing. Some of the website Rankings really sunk down on Jan 17, even sites that had good PR or sites that had done white hat seo too were on the list, so is there anybody who's site rankings have improved now ?

Haan yaar ! first the keywords that were on 1 page slipped to 3 or 5 th page and the keywords that were on 2nd were kicked out at 10 th or 20th page,

The only of those who have survived this as far as my research goes are those who had a significant amount backlinks from guest posts. All the other fellas took a dive down, even those who had backlinks from 100 unique articles were on page 2 or 3 after this unoffical update.

My rankings have pretty much stayed the same, perhaps a slight improvement. Then again, I just focused on writing content and building a few high quality relevant links.

My rankings improved after panda update. I just added unique content constantly. Nothing else.

I still dont get how someone could copy my site that was up for almost a year already word by word, then now out rank me on some keywords. How is that possible?

It is a bit ironical when you see spammers and those who used automated softwares to gain backlinks enjoying top positions, where as those who did manually with priority on getting high quality PR backlinks were sunk down to 10 or 20th page. I know most of the forum guys - experts, here would call that its due to bad linkbuilding you got penalized, but no i don't think so this has been the case always even those who did some sensible seo too were penalized during these recent updates

Well Jan.17 wasn't penguin - official statement from Google denies any penguin update on that day.

This one really has gotten me down, but just need to step up my SEO efforts and see if I can retain my rankings. The main ranking was for a keyword with over 3 million results, I ranked number 1 for it. Now I rank number 2 and the copy cat site ranks number 1. This particular site makes decent money for me so it upsets me to see someone taking my hard work away like that.

But I would say, nothing to STOP you, start and keep going with your regular link building, Of course, you may get number one back with few links.... If you follow white-hat methods earlier and now, you don't need to worry, just keep working....

Yeah thats all I have done, white hat methods. What is bothering me is the person copying my site is obviously not using white hat methods yet is out ranking my site even though my site has a page rank of 3, been around for almost a year before they copied my site and they have the same exact information on their site as mine. Heck they even have my domain name on their about us page, didnt even bother to update that when they copied my site.

Man really sorry about that, I hope your site tops the ranking list one day.

Just saw mozcast - there has been fluctuations in the SERP's Climate - particularly on jan30 and Jan 29. My site jumped two pages ahead from 8th to 6th for 1 keyword, but still its long way to comeback from where it started earlier.

And I have no plans to do SEO all over again.

May be google likes LinkBlasters and Spammers. Thats why some of them are still on top after all these update.

Nope.... No improvements. Major English sites have dropped their rankings. Also I hardly found people saying that their rankings have improved.

Yes my ranking have improved drastically. But not on Jan 17th, this happened just 2 days ago. None of my keywords were being found at all, and how I have 4 showing up between pages 2 & 4.

I've had some go up and some go down. Some are actually still dancing, and were stable before the update. I don't really know what to make of it, so I am just going to push forward like nothing changed and wait for things to settle down.

IMHO, no body has got a clue about what the jan.17 update was really about. It looked that Google just randomly shuffled websites, now I see irrelevant blogs on page 1 for many keywords. Blogs that have got nothing to do with that keyword search.

All I know is that whenever I search for anything on Google anymore, the first 2 pages are pretty much links to big retail stores or major major sites: amazon, home depot, walmart, wiki, ehow, etc etc etc. And it seems to be worse every time there's another update or shuffle.

I picked a keyword a year ago that had only smallish / niche sites at the top, and now a handful of updates later, they have all been pushed down below 20.

Honestly I find is more aggravating as a searcher than as a noob IM. Just doing regular things on the internet I'm finding that I need to go farther and farther into results to find what I am looking for!

I second that opinion, along with irrelevant blogs, only major sites can be seen in the top-10 or Top - 20 positions now.

Once I had surpassed these major sites to gain top rankings for a few keywords now they are back, I even checked thier backlinks they are same as they were earlier nothing new links from competitors, it was my site that was pulled down for not bieng a major one.

My question how can google discriminate a new site - alteast without giving us a chance to become as a major brand / site. They should look into the content of the site and see its potential. Just by shuffling rankings and placing newer sites with high potential below seems illogical to me

Hi, I've noticed the same for my American project: for a 1st page keyword we dropped off to the 23rd.. the positions are fluctuating, but nothing improved yet.

For another one (American too) it's all still.

I use the same methods for both, but competitiveness is different. The first one is more competitive.

Does anybody have idea, how to recover from this?

Something happened. At least to my sites. I saw a loss on sites with really good link profiles, specifically one that has been #1 for years. I also saw a jump in page rank AND on the serps for a few starter sites that have virtually no backlinks but lots of content. I mean these are new bare bones sites with a blog being their only asset. These got visited by the pr fairy and one jumped from pr 0 to pr 3 overnight, crazy. They jumped in the serps too, major progress!

I know what is wrong at the old authority site, my client is one of those owners that insists on doing all of his onsite stuff himself. He's a techie, this site is his baby and he puts aesthetics before SEO. He has no blog, he can't let go. He wants ony links from me, which I give him, good high pr do-follows on a daily basis. But this change in January has him realizing that links aren't going to cut it. He needs content, he needs onpage SEO and maybe now he'll let me do it. So yay for change!

For my review site using wolffmmii's (forgive me if this is misspelled) method, I actually saw an increase in rankings. One of the reviews shot straight to #1 after being in 3rd place behind two Amazon pages.

        Edited to add:

I also have a review site using backlinks provided by nik0 and I didn't see any drops.

@sillysoft I hate that for you! No time to lose though, you should redo the content, all of it. Maybe add a blog if you haven't already, keep fresh content flowing, also add the canonical tag then get the updated pages indexed as fast as you can. Remember: plagiarism is the highest form of flattery Good luck!!
