What the $%#@ is going on with Google?

I recently hit page 1 for my main keyword I've been trying to rank for, which is great, but for the past couple of days, I'ven been bouncing around on page 1 literally every few hours.

I got to as high as #4, then a few hours later I would go down to #7, then up to #5, etc.

Then, this morning, I noticed all of a sudden my picture doesn't show up anymore in the SERPs (Google Authorship) when I google my main keyword.

Does anyone know what's going on with Google right now? I've never seen this type of volatility with an older site, especially this much movement every few hours!

Thanks!

Thanks for sharing. According to the "weather report", nothing drastic has been going on. I wonder if it's something under the radar. Thanks for the link btw, very helpful.

I know what you're saying, buddy! I'm just curious what's going on. I'm doing whatever I can to diversify my traffic but so far, unfortunately most of it is from Google.

You shoudn't apologize for being straight-forward.

You should apologize for being so vague.

No offense to you but that mozcast/link is the dumbest thing Moz has ever done & has nothing to do with anyone's site & especially nothing to do with Google SERPs.

They are testing out new algorithms now. I see more you tube videos and I rank under a movie I posted many years ago. Yeah, it is funny in a way. They want to promote their own stuff like you tube, blogger, etc more. This is interesting as I am seeing more pictures on the main page now. These pictures will push down your listing meaning less click, but there we go. What we are seeing is more images. 10 blue links is going away. OK as to what the replacement is... we are not so sure.

I can relate to the Google+ image disappearing. I had my picture appearing next to my SERPs from week 2 of my website being up and running and then 4 days later it disappeared, never to return. Any idea why?

There will always be fluctuations in Google. Most people check their rankings WAY too often. You should try it once a week to get a good baseline.

Really depends on the niche/keyword, but those kind of fluctuations are not as unusual as some people think. I'm working in some markets where the top 8 is fluctuating pretty much all day long. It is not indicative of any major updates like other people have suggested. It might just be the norm for that keyword.

The authorship thing, I don't know. That is more unusual.

It would still bounce, and it would take some time, for stable position ranking, the problem is in trust, you need to build more trust links using authority sites, your site should also look authority, it is going to help, I think.

I feel that way about the big "G". I don't like playing the SEO game at all, but this authority site I started a few months ago is starting to take off now and I'm just evaluating all my traffic options.

I didn't even think about that! Thanks for mentioning.

I have no idea... It appears the "dancing" is done and Google decided to remove my picture from the SERPs for my main keyword. The were definitely doing something...

His point was heard loud and clear.

Good point. I couldn't help but keep looking at my ranking b/c I was so shocked my site was bouncing around so much.

Thanks for your input. This is the first time I noticed the extreme dancing but it's good to know this sort of thing can be normal.

Thanks for your input. I'm building my site to be an authority but one side of that equation, like you mentioned, is to get authority links back.

I have a much more extreme story, about 2% of my clients experience huge fluctuations.

For example one of them is bouncing between #7 and #200 for an extremily competitive keyword, day 1 he is at #7, day 2 at #200+, day 3 at #7 again, and it has been going on like this for more then a month now and I can put my watch on it every day and it just keeps on repeating in that pattern.
