Yes the update has been rolled out. My first observations are this:

    - Links from seo tools have been devalued. I think they have targeted SEnuke and other similar tools.
    - Links from social bookmarks, wikis and article directories are devalued.
    - Good web 2.0 links retain their value.
    - Good relevant paid links retain their value.
    - I also think there is some form of content analysis that devalues links. Although i am not sure yet.

By proxy this obviously increases the value of other metrics. Nothing is surprising with this update at all, and it just echoes the general direction Google is heading the the objectives they are trying to achieve.

I will write a full report on this when the dust settles.

FYI i have been monitoring my niche like a hawk. So i am seeing which sites rise and which sites fall. In the next 24-48 hours i will write a blog post and tell you exactly what has been effected.

I agree with that list, paid links still work as good as always and the sites with a lot of spammy links have been hit so it just shows that Google can't do much about paid links really.

Yeah I agree with you. One of my EMDs was tanked last night and it was full of automated SEO crap. All the sites that use manual tiered links are fine. They have either maintained rank or moved up.

It's still early days but I'm following a few guys on Twitter and seeing what they're coming up.

Links from submit tools are being targeted? (Like SENuke?)

I'm curious on how you believe that is the case? How can the new Algorithm change detect links submitted by bot or by hand?

I don't think it is a case of Google detecting how a link was actually made, more a case of where the link is, ie on sites that tend to be battered by automated software.

Google will notoriously lump other stuff in an update. It wouldnt take them a day to infiltrate SENuke, click the devalue outing links button on all of the most spammed sites/platforms.

Then BOOM. Half of everyones link profile is gone.

Don't get me wrong, i have been hit by this update and my ranks dropped (5-10 places in most cases) for a lot of terms.

On top of this, i noticed a particular blog network i use has been partially deindexed. And i noticed these blogs being deindexed around the time of the update. So they throw out a new algo update, deindex sites, probably throw out some content analysis updates and manually devalue a load of links at once. It gives google the illusion they are smarter than they are.

If you look at the spam sites ranking for big terms, they arent getting links that ALL of the marketers are getting. They are spamming using custom mods and custom tools.

Rule of thumb: When everyone does something, it becomes a problem for google. Then they attack what everyone is doing to bring things back in line. Zig when everyone zags.

The way forward: Massive content sites + strategic links (Anchor text doesnt really matter that much anymore so get generic links or brand/naked links) via paid methods.

Just a little side note about all this:

Don't rely on SerpFox as it is a bit slow with updating, just had a client email me that he lost all rankings while Serpfox still showed him ranking on the first page for many keywords.

His site did have 1000's of spammy back links before he turned to me a few months ago so it is in line of expectations but still, don't stare yourself to blind at serp checking tools as they are a bit slow.

Just checked my own sites and a few client sites that have fairly new sites, as in less then 6 months old with no spammy back links and they still do fine.

Agree on the previous posts but just to add, here are a few more points:

    1. Do not buy links from spam sources
    2. Build links that are relevant to your content
    3. Do not overuse link anchor text

Here is a quick blog post I just wrote: Google Penguin 2.0 Is Out, Now What?

    Hi

In this update the initial highlighted factors are as follows:

    • Penalizing websites who are using black hat link spam techniques
    • Penalizing websites with weak internal linking structure
    • Penalizing websites which have low quality, irrelevant and less contextual based inbound links
    • Home page and internal pages will be considered separate entities in search results and credibility of inbound links attached to internal pages even will penalize the whole website in terms of rankings.
    • Quality and credibility of Internal pages are also now considered the major influence in the website performance.

    Initial Solution:
    • Check On page optimization
    • Check website backlinks and disavow irrelevant and low quality backlinks
    • Generate unique contextual based backlinks from quality and credible websites.

I think Google is simply fine tuning the process of weeding out SENuke type tools and the sites that host endless spammy links.
They have to be careful, so only the really naughty sites seem to have been targeted this time round, but expect this to get more and more thorough.

The days of paid for mass backlinks are gone.

Here's a think. I have a 3 month old site that's getting around 350 hits a day, with absolutely zero backlinks.
All it has is around 700 videos embedded from Google.

I never thought it woud do anything, but it's got me really confused, as all my visitors are coming from the 3 big search engines...

Anyway, moral of the story is that if you love your sites do not purchase backlinks.
Do what we did in the old days, and build them yourself.

There is truth in this statement I have several websites that have absolutely zero back links Because they are brand-new and they have risen in the SERP inexplicitly, one is for a keyword with around 1000 Searches per month, page 1 and ZERO links. (Crazy)
