Keyword In Domain Name....!!!!!!Help

Hi all, thanks in advance for replying

I found a great niche market but it has a site climbing the ranks, the site is an emd but with a hyphen going after a KW that I was to pursue. (Example: penis-pills.me) I know that EMD domains usually can't get on the #1 spot, my question is if you hyphenate an EMD is it still a EMD?

    Hi,

    Step away from the EMD and go with something more brandable.

    Take a look at http://www.searchmetrics.com/en/serv...-factors-2013/ to see how relevant having the keyword in the domain or even the URL is.

    Eg. It makes 0 difference

    EMDs doesn't have the value it once did.

    It still benefits to a certain degree, keywords are bolded in searches so it would help your click through rate on SERPs although you would still need to have a proper onsite and offsite SEO campaign.

    They are still worth it if you're choosing a reasonable length EMD though I wouldn't suggest going for hyphenated. Even for domain value hyphenated, people rarely purchase hyphenated domains

        NO! It is a generic but NOT a EMD...What makes the EMD so important is type in traffic, No one is going to type in a domain with a hyphen.

    Domains with hyphens have really dropped off in SEO power. Part of why is because they were heavily abused for a long time by spammers and SEOs with thin sites and Google has since gotten more sophisticated and looked at things like CTR, bounce rate and patterns of low quality sites. If it's a long-time established hyphen domain with a quality site that is not apparently trying to play the system, there's no issue with them. Otherwise, Google's going to look at it like most humans these days do - hyphen domains look lower quality and often spammy.

    I used to deal a lot in them and they sold well for a while, but these days no one wants them.

      Using hyphens or not in an eye of Google is the same but not in visitors eyes. It's more clear and better not to use hyphens. Try to put yourself in visitors position and put in front of you two same domain name but one with hyphens...

        Actually, just the opposite. Google says to use hyphens because
        humans know what they are...and there is no mistake.

        Domain hyphens have nothing to do with SEO, unless you forget to add one
        where it should be.

        People shy away from hyphens in print marketing, not SEO. They are
        not the same.

        If you think hyphens in domains are bad, then I dare you to NOT use
        hyphens in urls. If it's bad in domains, it must be worse in urls. No way
        would I ever NOT use hyphens in urls in most cases of multiple word urls.
        Just like the WF. This thread would be one jumbled mess of a url.

        A lot of those domains have added a hyphenated version for obvious reasons. In particular experts-exchange.com

      Why keyword in domain???? See the big domains Google, Yahoo, Facebook... any keyword on them??? if you go on Flippa you can see many sites worth thousands of $$$ with no sense domain name...I think you got to concentrate yourself on the content, keywords must be on the content.

      For SEO purposes and in the eyes of Google, it does not make a difference. I don't use hyphens in domain names but I often use them for posts and pages, for example; mydomain com /new-post

      Google sees each hyphenated word as an individual word.
      e.g. For URL www.A-B-C, Google will give result for A, B and C...
      So, if you want to rank separately for A, B and C...you may use hyphens.

      If domain is available without hyphens than go for it. Making a EMD is best way to get good results in quicker way. But if your name is not available than you can use hyphens...All the best.

      Hyphens in domain won't be good. Domain name works as brand name for a site. So try to take a domain name that can be pronounced easily and people don't have remember any special character.

      You can use hyphen in a domain name.
      My personal opinion would be to try to avoid domain names with hyphen because they are more difficult to remember. When you give the domain name to your friends and customers they may not remember if it did have hyphen or not.
      There are some popular websites that have hyphen on their domains but it is a minority.
      In terms of branding I would recommend it without. It just looks cleaner and will be easier to remember.


      Having the keyword that you are trying to target in the domian name worked before but now there are so many other factors taken into accoutn when it comes to your position in the search engines that I would not get too obsessed about it.


      Having the exact keyword in your domain can make the domain look spammy.

      Matt Cutts wrote a blog post about using hyphens/dashes in URLs/domains.

      He stated:

      "I’ve stylized the conversation quite a bit, but I remember how impressed I was that Google indexed numbers and some punctuation (come to think of it, search engines have come a long way in five years). With underscores, Google’s programmer roots are showing. Lots of computer programming languages have stuff like _MAXINT, which may be different than MAXINT. So if you have a url like word1_word2, Google will only return that page if the user searches for word1_word2 (which almost never happens). If you have a url like word1-word2, that page can be returned for the searches word1, word2, and even “word1 word2″."

      Hyphenated domain names are not attractive to look at and they are more complicated to remember. Users are likely to commit errors in typing unless they bookmark your site. Like what is mentioned, hyphens are more used in pages and posts.

      Emd is always good for better serp.but if you use Hyphens it not looks so professional ...............For professional looks you should avoid Hyphens from domain..........

      I have different view on this.

      My feeling is that it is easier to read a hyphenated domain name in the address bar in general as the individual words just stand out much better when separated by a hyphen.

      So if I was really serious about a web site I was building and intended to use it for a long period of time, I would buy both the hyphenated and unhyphenated version of the domain name and redirect users who typed in the unhyphenated version to the hyphenated version as it was easier to read and therefore easier remember.

      I would not though buy a hyphenated version of a domain name if someone else owned the unhyphenated version. That won't work.

      To use hyphens or not to doesn't make any difference for SEO point of view. But short and simple names without hyphens are always given preference by users.
      For SEO you should focus on getting top quality articles on your keywords.

      if you can get the domain without hyphens then great, but still take the one with hyphens as it stops competition, my own site has now been launched with a 2 instead of TO by competition as I took the hyphen version as a safe guard and now glad I did.

    Who told you so? You have got a website with great content and your domain contains your main keyword and Google is just not ranking your site. How rude is that? Ranking is all about content and backlinks. If you do them well, you can even rank a domain with 7 hyphens.

    I would focus more on long-tail keyword usage. Along with providing "quality" original content on your site.

      Fact is - EMD still get a big bonus just google watch them now a bit closer to avoid the usual WF member who thinks a EMD + No Hand SEO will make him rich in short times.

    EMD's can't get to #1? Man, I just love what people are learning these days from the so-called experts...

    For one, all domains are technically EMD's for something. It just depends on what people are searching for. Now, using your example, penis-pills.me is NOT an EMD for ranking for the search term: penis pills . But, if someone was typing in penis-pills , then it would be and EMD.
