How do I use social media to improve SEO?

Is there a way to use sites like facebook, twitter and the like to get better SEO results for my websites? It seems most of the links from these sites are nofollow. Any advice?

    Only depending on social media sites won't be good idea, I would say that you should use other ways as well.

    However, setting up profiles on top social networking websites, would give social signal to Google and it helps in SEO as well.

    Hai Andrew,

    Your question is very genuine. I too had these doubts but then Google is growing everyday. Their algorithms are modified to think more like humans.

    So logically what happens is, though these social sites have no-follow links, in Search Engine(SE) point of view, there are very high signals for your site's social presence and popularity.

    Also you submit it only to sites that gives you links, it will be more obvious to the SE that you are doing SEO which may harm if you overdo. But if have a mixture of links with no-follows links then it will be very natural.

    The truth is that SE follow the no-follow links, but they do not show it as backlinks. They are used as sentiment parameter to the algorithms.

    Social signals is a must in todays seo but you dont have to go only with them.

    A mix of facebook shares-likes-tweets G+1 + good on page and off page seo will give you the results you are looking for!

    Despite the nonsense answers above you don't use social media to improve SEO.
    You use it to improve Web presence,branding and customer retention of your business.
    You will not Tweet your way to the top of a SERP.

They are the best way to get customers engaged if you are actively using them. If you are successful in doing so your brand will be recognized by people and they will keep visiting your site.     Social media have no direct connections like link building which can rank your website. But as everyone says in market having good social signals is good thing to have when mixed with other offsite seo plans.

    So Social media links are to show your site is been talk among people not for backlinks...

    I don't have much experience as you guys in seo, but I think the number of share or like on social sites like Facebook helps your rankings.I mean get likes for your website's page not the facebook page and it will improve your page's stats.

    Another way to look at it may be....

    Using social media to spread the message about your valuable content and some "may" end up linking to it "naturally" from other sources providing more links you would not have received otherwise. Just my .02.

    I have a facebook page which has about 150k like. I can direct my members to my sites or my youtube channel. It's a very simple example for getting hits for sites.

    If you want to lead your facebook friends or twitter followers to your site or somewhere else you should have a environment which occur from interested in your sites content.
