Query about 404 error page - adsense

Hi, i am getting crawler error and i think that the reason is having a lots of 404 error page. So i have redirected the 404 error page to my index page.

I need help:
1. Is redirecting 404 page to index page good or destructive for my website or could it lead my website to ban from google?

2. Is it necessary for google to have a 404 error page?

    404 redirecting to your index pages does not harm in any way.

    The reason to Have a custom 404 page is that user may find the pages with your theme and would be landing on the website with navigation.

    There is no problem to have a 404 page to redirect to index but would recommend to have 404 page because the user might navigate through your services or products. It gives them the information the page has been moved/removed.

    It would be better to collect the error pages from GWT and 301 redirect to related pages.

    Thanks for your good suggestion, i have collected the error pages from GWT. But there are more 404 pages coming. So it is not possible to use 301 redirect, but if i redirect only one 404 page to index then all the error pages will follow this rule.

    What do you think?

    There is a problem if you are trying to redirect to pass PR from an error
    because redirecting page will return a "200 OK" or 302 redirect code,
    instead of a proper 404. Search engines will see a whole bunch of indexed
    URL's as "200 OK" duplicates of your home page

    This is bad for your site because of whole lot of indexed "error" pages in
    search engines thus you better of SEO wise to have 404 page with custom
    content helpful for your visitors or simply redirecting them to useful page
    in your site.

    The proper behavior for an error page is to return a 404 error code.
    The best result for your visitors is an error page that is either helpful by itself
    or redirects to a helpful page. The best result from an SEO viewpoint is for
    any link popularity for broken links be passed on to the page of your choice.

    Keep in mind as soon as the SE is sent the error code, it treats it as a dead
    page and will eventually remove it.

      Thanks for your good reply, but i want to skip crawl errors, the 99% crawl errors are coming from 404 error pages. If i redirect those 404 pages to index then google will see only index page and they will not give any error.
