Thinking of changing domain, need advice

Hi Everyone,

Long time lurker but first time post. I am entertaining changing my domain name but need to advice as to whether I should pursue or not, below are the details.

I am currently an Apple focused IT consultant and I have a current website domain of bayonconsultants.com. I am fine with that domain and don't really have any complaints, other than it's a tad long to spell out, but that's it.

The other day I purchased the domain bayon.it. I bought it for a a few reasons, one being it is shorter and I really like just having bayon as my domain name. The other reason is the vanity domain, using .it to represent being in the IT business.

With that said, obviously I am using Italy's domain but twisting it to represent my industry. My question is, are there some unforeseen consequences from using a different country code to represent something that doesn't have anything to do with the country? I'm not dead set on the change, merely just researching to see what harm, if any it could cause.

If you are trying for international or US results (much larger markets than Italy alone) stick with the .com domain. 301 the Italy domain to the .com and build links from Italian sites as well.

I would automatically associate .it with Italy and not with IT, so I wouldn't change it.

No idea why someone tells you to build Italian links to the .it domain btw, unless you want to rank in Italy it might help. Otherwise you just focus on strong links.

Thanks for the advice guys, it's what I was expecting. I was trying to be clever with the domain name, but looks like it will be more of a hassle. I'm definitely not competing on an international level so it wouldn't make sense.

Instead what I purchased last night was bayonit.com, which accomplishes my goal of getting a shorter domain and also gets one of my keywords in the domain.

Thanks again for the help with the noob question and I'm sure I'll have many more as time goes on.
