Hi,

I have been using the https://ahrefs.com website to check my backlinks, URL rank and referring domains. The last few days my backlinks have been dropping, I really have no idea why.

Previously I had
Referring Domains: 73 and it's now 66.
Backlinks: 286 and now 221 and dropping.
URL Rank: 21 and now it's 17.

I have no idea why this is and why is only the last few days it has started to drop everyday.

I would appreciate any help, if someone can PM me I will send my site and see if I am doing something wrong in terms of SEO as well? I am also having trouble with meta description since we had a new theme designed around 3 weeks ago - Maybe this has something to do with it?

EDIT: Checked with http://www.majesticseo.com/ - Slightly better and not as much of a loss as ahrefs is showing. very confused at the moment.

It's possible that some of your current backlinks were dropped. Or perhaps the site your link is located on returned an error when Ahrefs last crawled it. Backlink profiles are never static.

Do you have a webmaster tools account set up?
I can give you a much better idea about whats happening with some webmaster tools data.
I manage over 200 sites ranging from no traffic to over a 4 million per month.
      I've seen about everything.

Did you build those links yourself?

If you didn't, it could simply be a case of the other webmasters who used to link to you removing the links.

There are just inconsistencies in measuring the backlinks.
Thanks for your reply, had a quick check today and it's went up a little, rather than dropping everyday.

Most of the links are not built by myself, they are generally artists who posts the link to our articles about themselves. I've only recently started doing my own as I have been looking in to how SEO works.

Let me share what we are doing. We own a large private blog network for our clients and we discovered 80% of the traffic was caused by the third party bots like ahrefs and majestic plus numerous weird crawlers from China.

We figured being discovered by others offer absolutely no benefit to our clients as the links can get reported to Google manually or via disavowel.

We told our clients we are actively hiding our network from all third party bots.

The result? We are seeing better rankings than before.

Hiding links is the new trend now.

How does your clients know they even have links If your hiding from bots & not showing them a link profile? Until a page is ranked #1 (If ever) you'll have no proof of anything for a paying client. Clients actually go along with this, knowing they'll never get a link profile shown to them? I guess your in the link selling business.

...It's obviously just rambling bullshit to promote the WSO they launched today.

          That's never happened before.

I know If I was buying links I better have a link profile in front of me. If they're advertising as something else (ex: monthly service) instead of a link seller that's a bit different. I read them as a link seller.

From the numbers that you told us that is not really a huge change and its normal for referring domains and the amount of backlinks to go up or down especially on majesticseo or ahrefs.

Keep in mind some links will drop over time if you neglect your seo for a long period of time. Just remember majesticseo and Ahrefs its not an exact reporting.

Since you are finding errors with Majestic SEO or Ahrefs, login to your Google Webmasters Account and navigate to Links and check the number of links that are coming to your site and from which domains. This will give you an exact idea about the domains that are linking to you.

Thank you all for the advice! I noticed in my GWT that it says I have Total links
1,462 - How accurate and up to date is this?

Well it maybe because the site has been closed or dead or the link has been removed from the site or the post has been removed any reason may reduce links. Still you can check your links through google webmaster it shows accurate links data

This is also standard. What I mean is this happens with all sites. Here are some examples of why:

If you made a blog comment on a site sometimes they have recent commenters installed on their sidebar. That means your comment will show up on every page of that site. Your links will skyrocket depending on how many pages the site has. Then as others begin to comment you will fall off of the recent commenters and then lose all of the links from that site.

Another reason is lets say you have a link from a blog. As that blog begins to go farther and farther back in the archives it could show up several times as a link until those previous pages are recrawled by the link checkers.

Don't stress about a loss of links like that, but focus on what links you are losing. Have you looked at that yet?

If your putting links on social bookmark sites, just keep in mind the owners of those sites do remove links more than 6 months old, as bandwidth on those sites can go through the roof. I know of one group, that do host 30 bookmark sites on one server, but every 6 months they will all the links off their sites. I should point out, i have several bookmark sites and this is not a practice i follow

Majestic will actually show you how many links you've lost by day and it will show you the URLs of the links you've lost as well.

Just click on the "Lost" link under the search box after you've done a search on your domain.

This won't tell you why you've lost your links but it will show you what links you've lost. Maybe that can help you figure out why.
