Agreed. I also saw improvement in rankings with backlinks from totally unrelated sites. The good thing about related links is they also generate traffic, for obvious reasons.

I use SpyGlass and Rank Tracker from Link-Assistant.

Another great tool is the SearchStatus plugin for quick PR / Alexa check and also to check robots and sitemap file, keyword density, etc.

Social bookmarks sites get shutdown or close profile pages so often that soon there will be only a handful. Then it won't matter what software you use.
