But this seems to be unfair! if so, anyone can do so to penalize his competitors! Google should be more intelligent to handle such cases...
If this can be the case, why spend huge money in buying...

It is not normal that google sandbox a website if receiving "lot" of backlinks. If this is true, anyone can do that for his competitors..
So many many SEO professionals don't believe in that...

Go slowly building good backlinks (5 - 10 per day).. so when it comes alive again in google serps will get good ranking.

I read a lot about this and have remarked this on some of my websites but come back again to 1st page if doing backlinking slowly and seriously using white hat techniques.
