I heard something about that site in particular that they only accept members from a certain few countries. Perhaps it makes it less complicated to manage or something.

Absolutely right - good post. This model is on offer in alot of places. Just look at ikea for example. They make you follow a set route through their store, put stuff you don't need in front of you...

You could also join a website like Linkedin. There are lots of bloggers there, and blogging communities which are free to join - most of the time, they list their blogs and one can usually comment
