What would your strategy be to get 1,000,000 FB likes in 12 months?

Recently I started building a content based website around travel/recreation in my region and it has already shown great success(250k hits within the first 5 weeks). Currently I am only posting 1-2 new articles a week, but I have had 2 of those posts go semi-viral(100k+ hits), so I know that the content I am creating is sharable and the niche does have appeal. The question is how to build a larger audience and get more hits to my website.

I have researched my target market and believe it is possible to make my goal of 1,000,000 fb likes within my first year(one of my competitors has a smaller geographical area and has 350k+ fb fans).... I just don't know the best way to do so.

Currently I am:
-Creating FB posts for every new article I add to my website
-Sharing related articles from similar pages
-Occasionally posting travel/adventure quotes

I plan to host my first contest on May 1st and hope that will help as well.

Do you guys have any suggestions on what would enable me to reach my goal faster? I understand that if I continue to do what I am doing I will continue to see results, but I am always about improving and finding new ways to reach my goals.

Any help, suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated!

I would also like to add that currently(month of April) I do not have any funds to spend on marketing... But at the end of the month I will receive my first check from the website and will have a starting budget of $250. So if you were in my shoes, what would you find would be the most effective way to use that money to increase my Facebook presence?

You should look into Facebook ads for your content and develop a good system for visitors so you can get some good income kicking in. I know you mentioned something about not having money for marketing but you are making your job harder but not having funds to market your blog easily thru Facebook ads. Test which type of articles do well and keep running with those...

I will be looking into doing Adverts and boosts starting May 1st, I will start having funds for marketing then.

I will have $250 to start marketing at that point, but what would you recommend being the best use for that money?

And do you know what types of content does well for generating engagement? (Besides articles... I have found success with that)

To accelerate the process, I would suggest:
    1. Set a side a portion of your budget in building a community on Facebook (invest in LIKES)
    2. Once you have critical mass i.e. around 20k or so likes, invest in boosting posts
    3. Provide a giveaway i.e. coupon/special offers or similar lead magnet and use Facebook to populate your email list
    4. Use Videos as much as possible. Reach of text and images posts is being suffocated terribly.

So it would make more sense to put my money in gaining Facebook likes first correct?
and how much money do you think it would cost to reach 20k hits?(estimation)

Next month I am going to start my first Monthly Photo Contest(with a prize) and hopefully that will do well. Other than that I need to research what type of competitions/give-a-ways etc do best for my niche... I haven't seen my competition do any lately so I'm not sure what else to do at this point.

Well I'm up to 500k hits on my website and almost 3,500 FB fans after using your suggestions, so thank you.

Some things I have noticed REALLY help:
--Writing a viral article and boosting it. My last article was found by radio stations and our states lottery fb page, and my competition and shared like crazy over the last 10 days.
-- Hosting contests. I'm doing a photo contest this month and asked fans to tag photographers they know. That really is going well and I'm on day 1.
-- Asking your fans for input after each article. Get's a LOT of comments going below that add value to your website.
--Focusing on building a community rather than just a website.

If you have any more suggestions I am all ears. =)

    Thanks for the ideas.

May I ask if your post content approach comprise mostly of written content? The reason I ask is I'm looking for posting ideas for my page and right now, I only have written content.

I trying a unique idea to a competitive market, so the content available is very limited. Currently, I'm creating all the content (written) myself.

    Thanks

It is hard to accomplish this without shares from other big pages. Talk to their managers, offer a good amount of money, make viral posts and you can do it!
