The New Paradigm for Social Media: Alt-Tech is Coming!

YouTube bad/ BitChute good. Facebook bad/ Minds good. Twitter bad/ Parler good.

I'm asserting this as fact. Prove me wrong or not - it's not here for me to display how prescient I am. I'd be a fortune teller if that were my aim.

You can take it as an assertion if you prefer - or even the uninformed ramblings of a lunatic - I honestly don't mind.

I would be happy to discuss my assertion further but that would take you away from making money.

There are multiple vectors to evaluate this on. As a marketer, FB/YT/et al may have some onerous rules and practices I don't love, but their superior ad targeting and (even today, despite FB raising prices per ad last quarter) and self service tools generally produce better ROI than any alternatives.

On the censorship/free speech dimension, imo there are some significant issues with the entrenched leaders ... issues that government doesn't fully understand, and that regulation counterintuitively tends to exacerbate (ie, online regulation often strengthens the leaders' position/advantage). To me, more interesting than competitive alternatives (Apple and Google can fairly easily shut most any new app down ... not that this will happen all the time, but we've seen a few examples recently) is the idea of decentralized media. Think something like an RSS feed aggregating multiple indie newsletters ... TBD if that'll ever fully take root among consumers, but could be a logical evolution of social media.

The other "new" development in social to my eyes is the ascent of 'real time' social networks ... a la Clubhouse or even Only Fans (albeit these two platforms offer VERY different content, hah). Real time content / response exists in chat rooms, of course (as well as as a subset of some of the bigger social networks, not to mention in podcast format), but evolving this to a more focused, video/audio format where the engagement in real time *is* the content, is imo fairly novel .... and could be pretty big (Elon Musk's Clubhouse chat and interview with the Robinhood CEO the other week being the biggest recent example). Suspect quarantines have highlighted for many folks how important human engagement really is, and in a way created an opportunity for digital platforms to fill some of the void...

what i am about to say probably sounds out there .. but my view is technology and algorithms have taken over .. even without an artificial general intelligence ..the smartest mind on the planet all over the planet tend to be serving the rapid evolution of technology in some way ..

the last 25 years the internet had drop many barriers and sort of pushed most humans into one huge social group .. but it has had a wide range of toxic effect ..

social media and technology in general is now in the process of letting humans sort themselves into much smaller social groups with each individual building their own social group .. of people we can interact with face to face or online .. based around similar view or similar interest .. and away from divisive political topics ..

the social media or alt tech .. will be for education purposes or people collaborating on similar subjects ..
