My Newsletter...

In the next couple of days, I'm going to come up with what I want my newsletter to be about.

I already have a couple of ideas that I had already considered before starting this thread.

I decided to start something completely new and document my journey from the beginning.

Tomorrow of course is Christmas and am doing a lot of family things, so will report back on the 26th with a subject I plan on using for a newsletter.

I will also explain why I chose what I did and how I came to my decision

So to be completely open and honest on where I'm at today with my newsletter...

I've decided 'self-help' is a good topic.

Not some nonsense stuff like 'think positive' and you'll be ok.

Instead, very detailed and step-by-step posts that cover every detail of the ideas that can change your life...or details about how to succeed in business and be profitable...even starting a side hustle with zero dollars and building it into a full-time income.

Things that cover life, business, diet, etc.

Right now what I'm trying to decide is if a newsletter that covers so many varied topics is good, or if it's too many different topics...and if I should niche down to a specific topic.

I'm kind of thinking a broad-based 'self-help' would be interesting to a lot of people.

What do you think?

My next step is to not only make my mind up about what I want the newsletter to specialize in...if not all of the things I mentioned...but to decide what platform I want to use.

I know that part of the reasoning behing a path thread is to try things out and see what works, but it's going to be difficult establishing authority across a wide range of topics - unless you already have a following.

Up to you, obviously, but your contributions over the years in the copywriting section would suggest to me that you'd have more chance of success - and more value to offer - in a topic related to that field.

The other thing I'd suggest is researching newsletter/subscription platforms like Substack and Ghost to see what subscribers are actually paying to read.

Just thinking with my fingers here....one way to have a 'multi-issue' self help platform might be to define 3-5 (?) topics where info in the newsletter relates to a subject matter that applies to more than one topic.

...or perhaps to have, say, 3-5 'categories' in mind where a topic can be tied into 2-3-4 or all of the categories in some way.

Maybe topics would not need to 'relate' across categories but the newsletter might cover 'the latest' or 'insight' or 'advances' in more than one category in each publication.

I agree with Frank to a point - you don't want to have a different focus each time. However, if you can manage (and with your copywriting skills I think you can ) to spread the focus a bit i think it would greatly widen your audience.

The only example that comes to mind at the moment is the long ago John Reese newsletter ($97 a month if I recall correctly though that sounds high). Each 'issue' was an update/insight/insider knowledge/'how to' on several areas of internet marketing....some closely related, others not so much.

I was a subscriber for some time and I remember opening the newsletter and immediately checking the headings and subheadings to see what i wanted to read first. Because it wasn't just "i'm great so buy this" - there was anticipation when the newsletter arrived....not sure if it was bi-weekly or monthly.

Not sure this post will make sense to you - but I know what I mean.

A few days ago I was reading the statistics from Substack, a platform that a lot of newsletters have originated from...and also some of the top newsletters in the world. I was looking to see what others were having success with and getting some ideas. The top ones on there seemed to be about politics and religion.

Financial newsletters are usually popular also, but I have very little knowledge of that world.

I do think like you said, it's a good idea to stick with what I know the most about.

Why, I don't know. But, when I read your post I did some research on him.

An amazing story.

Tried selling insurance and was so bad he became an alcoholic.

Ended up turning his life around and selling over 50 million books...as well as becoming a top salesman, trainer, and inspirational speaker.

One of his best-selling books was 'The World's Greatest Salesman'

My 2 cents here. "Success" doesnt happen on any 1 single level. I would be happy to discuss the idea that success happens on pretty much all levels - and yes there are examples of this not being true, but those people usually end up in Jail or dead - so the rule of total success still remains.

A title such as "The Foundation of Success" maybe Health, relationships, well beiing in general, family, family life balance etc etc etc - the foundation for success. Success in any one area in your life tends to flow into other aspects, as much as maybe not lack luster behaviour in any area may effect others.

Understanding the WHY... and maybe Max5ty, we can ask that of YOU... why? $10,000 isnt a why... its a result.

If I'm understanding your comment, you're saying success spills over to other levels?

I do believe success is multi-level. On the other hand, we all know some billionaires who have had failed marriages lately. And a billionaire who bought a business that is losing a ton of money daily.

So, I do agree, but also think it's a continual process that takes work.

As for the $10,000, that is a goal I set. It may take a year, it may be sooner.

I'm the type, or try to be the type that sets goals and then works on getting there.

If I had simply said my goal is to start a newsletter...well, that can be done overnight. There are actually a ton of newsletters out there and most of them fail or stay in the shadows somewhere with only a few readers. I wanted a way to gauge the success of what I was doing and picked that as a goal to shoot for.

I will also have a series of small goals along the way that will get me to my big goal...

first 100 subscribers...500...1000, etc. A series of small goals that are reachable in the short term.

Oddly enough, I found an old ad for a gardening magazine this morning.

It's USP... "A completely unique gardening magazine that doesn't just give growing advice, it's also about travel and photography for gardeners."

It ties into traveling the world, interviewing and discovering gardeners "secrets" from around the world and a photography session with one of their master photographers.

Anyway, your idea of "Self-Help" could branch out, say with various techniques from around the world, or tying it into anything that makes sense, business, copywriting, that makes it unique, that is of interest to you, but can impact millions of people.

Self-Improvement falls into that category.

Reminds me of the mental telepathy course that was sold.

A week or so after people ordered it they got a report card in the mail with an 'F'

People were responding back saying they never even got anything.

The reply back was: 'That's why you got an F'

Been a long holiday season. Lots of stuff going on.

Last night we went to visit some friends for the New Year stuff. Ashley parked on the street in front of our friend's home.

At about 12:30 this morning, someone rear-ended her Land Rover Discovery totaling it.

So, the new year is getting off to a bang.

But anyway, I'm putting together the finishing touches on my newsletter.

Right now, I'm planning on charging $12 a year for 12 issues.

I'll need 10,000 people to make the $10K a month. I don't see a problem with that. These will all come from spending zero dollars on advertising to start. I'll also show you how to do this step by step.

Of course, eventually, as the newsletter grows, there will be more fees for hosting, etc. I'm figuring about $100 a month for that. That will all be eventual as I said.

I'll give step-by-step instructions on where to host for free and send emails for free to start.

My plan right now is to do 12 Newsletters. Each one will be about a business you can start with almost zero money. I say almost zero because the only thing I recommend is a domain name. Those can be anywhere from $5 to $15 depending on your registrar. I'll give you my preferences.

Each one will be a full step-by-step in-depth guide that will give you everything you need to start the business from the comfort of your home. Yes, even while sitting at your kitchen table, or lying in bed.

Everything you need to know in simple, easy, done-for-you instructions. No stuff like cold calls or cold emails. All the email responders (if needed) will be written out for you. The landing page and everything else will be included with all the copywriting you need. E.V.E.R.Y.T.H.I.N.G. Helpful interviews. Insights. The list will be exhaustive.

As they say, a guide that will be so simple even a dummy can do it.

There will also be self-help stuff sprinkled in. I'm working on all the final details of that.

If by the end of the year, you don't have at least a few businesses going, then you just hadn't given it hardly any effort at all. I don't think you'll ever find anything easier.

These newsletters will have the power to make this your best year ever...

not only exciting but also able to change your future.

Now, since I'm doing this on the Warrior Forum, I don't want to make money from anyone on the forum. I'm working on an idea that will give a free subscription to any active member on the forum...I'm still working on the details.

Anyway, it's been a long holiday and I just wanted to follow up on this whole idea.

I think an email with a link would be good. The email would link to a blog post. Not sure...which is why I'm wondering if this matters, or if you have any thoughts on this?

Update: So, I'm running a little late here. A lot has happened since I last posted.

I was actually starting to feel like I had the flu when I last posted. Turns out I have Covid. I think I got it at a New Year's thing where one of our friend's 6-year-old son was diagnosed with it a couple of days later. A couple of other people have also tested positive.

It is like a bad flu. My nose was plugged and my throat was sore. According to the doctor, the symptoms have changed. It's no longer normal to lose your sense of smell or taste (which I didn't).

I was vaccinated previously so I think that helped a lot...

as well as being in decent shape and eating right. Today I'm feeling a whole lot better.

Anyway, I decided to use Beehiiv for the newsletter platform.

I chose that for several reasons:

1. You can have up to 2500 sign-ups for free. As the Newsletter grows, I can upgrade.

2. You can send as many emails as you want for free.

3. They include a website builder which I think is pretty awesome.

4. They offer subscription forms and magic links.

5. Plus, the free plan has analytics.

6. The site was started by former newsletter people (Morning Brew).

I'm not an affiliate of Beehiiv...just letting you know what I've decided and why.

My next decision is whether to complete the first newsletter or, start getting signups right away.

I'm leaning toward just getting signups...

maybe as a waiting list or not, I'm still deciding.

I've also been working on the copywriting of the landing page...which I'm almost done with. I think I'll have the page up and ready by tomorrow.

Edit: The first business I decided to detail is one that if you can't make $1500 a month (minimum) with a simple plan I'm giving, then you probably won't be able to do anything else. It's simple, easy, and, almost drop-dead foolproof. It's better than postcards, but it's in the same category. But, doesn't take any face to face selling. I'm excited to tell you about it.

Give yourself time to fully recover - the motivation will come back on its own as you feel better. No big rush.

So this year got off to a very rough start...

but, I'm ready to tackle anything ahead.

I've decided not to do the newsletter about starting a business...

and instead decided to focus on a hungry market that is easy to capture.

I decided to go with the spirituality market. Those who want to explore their spiritual selves...

I don't think 'what' I focus on in this thread is as important as 'how' I focus on it and build an audience.

The methodology of what I do is the most important part.

On February 15 I will post a landing page.

I don't expect anyone on the forum to sign up...but, if you want to follow how I plan on building this to a profitable newsletter you're welcome to follow along.

Twice a week we prepare letters for our base with offers of educational courses from our partners.
Great conditionally free source of traffic. We are satisfied with the results. The open rate of our emails is at the level of 30-35%. CTR - 8-9%.
