I have a newsletter I'm starting for 2024.

My goal is to have it at 10K per month in revenue by the end of the year.

You can follow my journey in this thread.

I will give you the details of everything I do to make it a success.

By the end of the year, we'll see if I met my goals.

Any feedback or suggestions are appreciated.

I plan to start a new newsletter on January 1, 2024, and build it from scratch with no subscribers.

I will try an update this thread at least daily, but no later than every 3 days...and will update you of all the ideas and changes I make.

In the next couple of days, I'm going to come up with what I want my newsletter to be about.

I already have a couple of ideas that I had already considered before starting this thread.

I decided to start something completely new and document my journey from the beginning.

Tomorrow of course is Christmas and am doing a lot of family things, so will report back on the 26th with a subject I plan on using for a newsletter.

I will also explain why I chose what I did and how I came to my decision

So to be completely open and honest on where I'm at today with my newsletter...

    I've decided 'self-help' is a good topic.

Not some nonsense stuff like 'think positive' and you'll be ok.

Instead, very detailed and step-by-step posts that cover every detail of the ideas that can change your life...or details about how to succeed in business and be profitable...even starting a side hustle with zero dollars and building it into a full-time income.

Things that cover life, business, diet, etc.

Right now what I'm trying to decide is if a newsletter that covers so many varied topics is good, or if it's too many different topics...and if I should niche down to a specific topic.

I'm kind of thinking a broad-based 'self-help' would be interesting to a lot of people.

    What do you think?

My next step is to not only make my mind up about what I want the newsletter to specialize in...if not all of the things I mentioned...but to decide what platform I want to use.

I know that part of the reasoning behing a path thread is to try things out and see what works, but it's going to be difficult establishing authority across a wide range of topics - unless you already have a following.

Up to you, obviously, but your contributions over the years in the copywriting section would suggest to me that you'd have more chance of success - and more value to offer - in a topic related to that field.

The other thing I'd suggest is researching newsletter/subscription platforms like Substack and Ghost to see what subscribers are actually paying to read.

    Good luck!

Thanks for your comment. I always love them.

I've been a health fanatic all my life and tried just about everything.

I've also started over 17 businesses over the years.

      I also love copywriting.

I'm probably overreaching on what I want the newsletter to be about...but today I was just being honest on my thoughts.

Sometimes I think we know the right answer, but we're looking for others to confirm it.

      Thanks again for the comment.

Edit: I had already looked into the top newsletters...the top ones are about politics. I wanted to do something here that would be acceptable for everyone to follow. I also considered religion...but that would also be difficult for everyone to follow on here as well. I'm looking for something that will be successful and acceptable for everyone.

The forum's rules prohibit discussions about politics and religion - on the forum. But a Warrior Path thread is intended to detail the process, rather that the content, so it might be possible to discuss your methods and progress without violating the forum's rules. I agree you'd have to tread carefully.

You're probably set on the newsletter model, but one way of covering a more diverse range of topics would be to feature experts or those with interesting views/experience in a range of loosely related fields. This might be more suited to a podcast - but could possibly work as a newsletter. I'm thinking that your own viewpoint, interests, relevant experience or personality might serve as uniting factors throughout these discussions, but there might be other ways to link them.

Just thinking with my fingers here....one way to have a 'multi-issue' self help platform might be to define 3-5 (?) topics where info in the newsletter relates to a subject matter that applies to more than one topic.

...or perhaps to have, say, 3-5 'categories' in mind where a topic can be tied into 2-3-4 or all of the categories in some way.

Maybe topics would not need to 'relate' across categories but the newsletter might cover 'the latest' or 'insight' or 'advances' in more than one category in each publication.

I agree with Frank to a point - you don't want to have a different focus each time. However, if you can manage (and with your copywriting skills I think you can ) to spread the focus a bit i think it would greatly widen your audience.

The only example that comes to mind at the moment is the long ago John Reese newsletter ($97 a month if I recall correctly though that sounds high). Each 'issue' was an update/insight/insider knowledge/'how to' on several areas of internet marketing....some closely related, others not so much.

I was a subscriber for some time and I remember opening the newsletter and immediately checking the headings and subheadings to see what i wanted to read first. Because it wasn't just "i'm great so buy this" - there was anticipation when the newsletter arrived....not sure if it was bi-weekly or monthly.

Not sure this post will make sense to you - but I know what I mean.

Actually Kay, your post was brilliant...

      it gave me an idea.

If I did a newsletter to 'business-minded people' I could cover topics they would be interested in.

Most business-minded people want to be healthy, etc.

Not sure I would call it 'to business-minded people' but I'll need to sit down and come up with a better title and description. This gives me something to think about.

I need to use my copywriting skills and come up with a title and description.

This gives me a lot to think about.

I can hear Og Mandino giving his business insights monthly in Success Unlimited. Look for a Christmas issue, 1977, and see the table of contents...almost exactly what you want to do. A focus on success, in many arenas, this issue I refer to features Carol Burnett and her secrets of success. And it had monthly columnists too, to help ease the publishing/writing too.

My version would combine Success Unlimted with FATE, and not only get the hardcore business HOW TO, but covers the woo woo part too.

I DO think you can cover many topics, IF, you have a featured column every issue on THAT subject, and often with two views (Point/CounterPoint)...whatever you do, I'm looking forward to subscribing.

@ Frank Donovan - Thank you. Some great ideas I will consider over the next few days.

A few days ago I was reading the statistics from Substack, a platform that a lot of newsletters have originated from...and also some of the top newsletters in the world. I was looking to see what others were having success with and getting some ideas. The top ones on there seemed to be about politics and religion.

Financial newsletters are usually popular also, but I have very little knowledge of that world.

I do think like you said, it's a good idea to stick with what I know the most about.

@ Gordon - I had never heard of Mandino.

Why, I don't know. But, when I read your post I did some research on him.

    An amazing story.

Tried selling insurance and was so bad he became an alcoholic.

Ended up turning his life around and selling over 50 million books...as well as becoming a top salesman, trainer, and inspirational speaker.

One of his best-selling books was 'The World's Greatest Salesman'

Very interesting story. Thanks for bringing him up.

I have nothing to do with this site, but thought it was an interesting article about him:

Og Mandino's "World's Greatest Salesman" was one first books I ever read that struck a chord in understanding our spiritual nature in my early 30's... without being too woo-woo!

I may need to re-read that book to refresh my memory of his brilliant ability to write compelling 'self-help' related material.

The scrolls in GREATEST SALESMAN would make a nice monthly newsletter, with each one having action plans along with it. When we borrow from literature/story telling, we can use the tested and proven, like the HERO'S JOURNEY and other story arcs.

So, one idea, might be to create a fictional avatar on their IM or money making journey...as opposed to doing and documenting. Melvin Powers had several best sellers; THE KNIGHT IN RUSTY ARMOUR and THE DRAGON SLAYER WITH THE HEAVY HEART...and sold tons of Og Mandino's books.

The whole idea of IM is to take or give your customer/avatar the ability to cross the bridge from here to there. It is mostly hope we offer, and lessons, guides, ways and means of getting across that bridge will always find an audience, be it metaphor, allegory, journey, or simple instruction.

And, what is important for newsletter publishers is to have a clear idea of those greener pastures on the other side of the bridge...and then write the map to get to the bridge.

You Art72 and Max5ty will have successful newsletters, I'm sure of it...good luck.

The map, the bridge, the master key... and all the ingenious minds who've utilized the knowledge (allegory, metaphors, and mythologies, etc) of those before them to produce written renditions of the dark forests, fighting dragons (or demons), and returning with instructions, directions, or a means to bring value to others is indeed a great use of human psychology and being in-service to others... no doubt.

Like you, I am looking forward to Max5ty's newsletter... and while, I too share an interest in the self-development arenas, my path is still pending approval... *I may have over-stepped the Warrior Forum RULES, and may need to refine my journey, and cut out the fat so to speak!

Point being, whether be it an annual membership or a premium newsletter, I cannot SEE a definitive end, as to what either option can produce or provide as both could evolve and be (or become) timeless if rendered correctly!

Although, I too think applying a financial goals, timelines, and a clear and concise path is important to start any journey... the real emphasis falls on whether the product or service is (*or will be) well-received by the reader/audience?... which can be difficult to predict how they interpret the content provided... especially, if the primary intent is to benefit the recipient(s) more than the creator's goal to make 'X' amount of money from the journey.

I'm still in the thick of my own dark forest, and cannot help to grin, as I am 1/2 way through Joseph Campbell's "The Hero With 1000 Faces" - And, re-listening to "The War of Art" by Pressfield (*AGAIN)... as they both did exactly what you defined above... and, I can only hope to one day repay these debts of gratitude by producing something of similar nature!

What I see in the self-development fields are too many fixed results...getting across the bridge to the greener pasture only changes the view...a glance past to see where one has been for sure, but also a NEW view of another bridge, perhaps several over an unknown river, vale or dale we didn't even know existed on the other side.

One may go on a great adventure, a journey to the castle we caught a glimpse of, but once we get into the castle, then a new journey begins. I don't think a clear path is ever required, as, once we see the tip of the castle from afar, we navigate what we believe to be the shortest route, from where we are. Which may or may not be the shortest.

"No straight lines make up my path..." sang Harry Chapin. The goal is a point in time, and time and tide stops for no man...so sayeth the cliche man.

A concern of timelessness may be more of a built in governor, a self inflicted bias wound, which places a false value upon legacy over the now.

I don't think getting money from value offered are mutually exclusive, and in fact, a weeding out of customers at the beginning to find those who DO benefit would be a better focal point...and then there is just not caring either. Like what we do here, we provide answers to questions asked by ghosts. Any given day we can see some Warrior ask for help and then disappear into the Internet Ether. Doesn't have anything to do with the quality of our responses, it is all on them...same with a customer, they get you or they don't.

Now this is just my opinion. And it is more universal, more macro than just a response to your post...although, if the shoe fits...

Too many people waste so much time, maybe years even, and don't publish their ideas.

Too many notebooks full of others' thoughts, an overstudy of sorts, and sometimes along with a "not yet good enough" feeling behind their lack of publishing (publish= to make available) and this delay is also part of a perfectionesque concept.

BE WRONG if need be. But make whatever it is available, and without concern or regard for its reception...C. Bukowski told me once to leave him alone...although I never really got close enough to "bother" him (appeared if you were breathing anywhere near him, you felt like you were invading his space...from a young man's viewpoint).

The poets we know of are the ones who PUBLISHED.

The millions of would be poets, writers, authors, novelists, et. al., may of had value to give us, but we'll never know now, will we?

My fav Bukowski saying: (when deciding to quit the post office) "I have one of two choices - stay in the post office and go crazy ... or stay out here and play at writer and starve. I have decided to starve."[

My 2 cents here. "Success" doesnt happen on any 1 single level. I would be happy to discuss the idea that success happens on pretty much all levels - and yes there are examples of this not being true, but those people usually end up in Jail or dead - so the rule of total success still remains.

A title such as "The Foundation of Success" maybe Health, relationships, well beiing in general, family, family life balance etc etc etc - the foundation for success. Success in any one area in your life tends to flow into other aspects, as much as maybe not lack luster behaviour in any area may effect others.

Understanding the WHY... and maybe Max5ty, we can ask that of YOU... why? $10,000 isnt a why... its a result.

@ Savidge4 - Thanks for the interesting comment.

If I'm understanding your comment, you're saying success spills over to other levels?

I do believe success is multi-level. On the other hand, we all know some billionaires who have had failed marriages lately. And a billionaire who bought a business that is losing a ton of money daily.

So, I do agree, but also think it's a continual process that takes work.

I'm sorry if I misunderstood your comment.

As for the $10,000, that is a goal I set. It may take a year, it may be sooner.

I'm the type, or try to be the type that sets goals and then works on getting there.

If I had simply said my goal is to start a newsletter...well, that can be done overnight. There are actually a ton of newsletters out there and most of them fail or stay in the shadows somewhere with only a few readers. I wanted a way to gauge the success of what I was doing and picked that as a goal to shoot for.

I will also have a series of small goals along the way that will get me to my big goal...

first 100 subscribers...500...1000, etc. A series of small goals that are reachable in the short term.

Oddly enough, I found an old ad for a gardening magazine this morning.

It's USP... "A completely unique gardening magazine that doesn't just give growing advice, it's also about travel and photography for gardeners."

It ties into traveling the world, interviewing and discovering gardeners "secrets" from around the world and a photography session with one of their master photographers.

Anyway, your idea of "Self-Help" could branch out, say with various techniques from around the world, or tying it into anything that makes sense, business, copywriting, that makes it unique, that is of interest to you, but can impact millions of people.

    Self-Improvement falls into that category.

    All the best.

@ David Allen- I love that.

    A newsletter about nothing.

Reminds me of the mental telepathy course that was sold.

A week or so after people ordered it they got a report card in the mail with an 'F'

People were responding back saying they never even got anything.

The reply back was: 'That's why you got an F'

Been a long holiday season. Lots of stuff going on.

Last night we went to visit some friends for the New Year stuff. Ashley parked on the street in front of our friend's home.

At about 12:30 this morning, someone rear-ended her Land Rover Discovery totaling it.

So, the new year is getting off to a bang.

But anyway, I'm putting together the finishing touches on my newsletter.

Right now, I'm planning on charging $12 a year for 12 issues.

I'll need 10,000 people to make the $10K a month. I don't see a problem with that. These will all come from spending zero dollars on advertising to start. I'll also show you how to do this step by step.

Of course, eventually, as the newsletter grows, there will be more fees for hosting, etc. I'm figuring about $100 a month for that. That will all be eventual as I said.

I'll give step-by-step instructions on where to host for free and send emails for free to start.

My plan right now is to do 12 Newsletters. Each one will be about a business you can start with almost zero money. I say almost zero because the only thing I recommend is a domain name. Those can be anywhere from $5 to $15 depending on your registrar. I'll give you my preferences.

Each one will be a full step-by-step in-depth guide that will give you everything you need to start the business from the comfort of your home. Yes, even while sitting at your kitchen table, or lying in bed.

Everything you need to know in simple, easy, done-for-you instructions. No stuff like cold calls or cold emails. All the email responders (if needed) will be written out for you. The landing page and everything else will be included with all the copywriting you need. E.V.E.R.Y.T.H.I.N.G. Helpful interviews. Insights. The list will be exhaustive.

As they say, a guide that will be so simple even a dummy can do it.

There will also be self-help stuff sprinkled in. I'm working on all the final details of that.

If by the end of the year, you don't have at least a few businesses going, then you just hadn't given it hardly any effort at all. I don't think you'll ever find anything easier.

These newsletters will have the power to make this your best year ever...

not only exciting but also able to change your future.

Now, since I'm doing this on the Warrior Forum, I don't want to make money from anyone on the forum. I'm working on an idea that will give a free subscription to any active member on the forum...I'm still working on the details.

Anyway, it's been a long holiday and I just wanted to follow up on this whole idea.

    It will happen. Stay tuned

Today for a couple of hours I was working on how I want to deliver the newsletter.

I don't think every newsletter has to be in an email...

    any thoughts on this?

I think an email with a link would be good. The email would link to a blog post. Not sure...which is why I'm wondering if this matters, or if you have any thoughts on this?

I have almost decided on a platform for the newsletter.

First of the month comes a lot of newsletters, magazines, and new links. My fav is a link to a monthly made with fliphtml5, so it turns pages like a magazine. I know the content is the same as a blog, or an email, but it seems to hold higher value in my mind. Two examples can be found at retailersforum dot com, with an image link near the top...and the other at xlbworld dot com /sts...and there is a link to current issue.

A very simple site like xlbworld can host these magazines on one page so it is very convenient to find an issue.

However you deliver it, I'm looking forward.

My thinking... would be to have a link to a post or PDF or page flippy thing, and then ask your audience to share the link.

I would follow this up with some exclusive content not shared in the newsletter... ok it is shared on the public newsletter but very Paul Harvey ish... "For the rest of the story sign up for the monthly newsletter"

Data suggest the moment you exclude by requiring username and password as an example, open rates drop and subscription life times cut in half. If you happen to have an android phone, this is in part why using Apps the password is saved

So allowing the public in general access to your newsletter... but keeping an amount of newsletter only exclusive content makes an amount of sense.

and back to the page flippy thing... kind of interesting... I can see the draw to it as an end user... its different its as close to tactile as the internet can get in regards to reading... but the draw back from the authors perspective. this parlor trick would be done using Java... and the text would not be Google friendly... as in probably wouldnt show up.

Really looking forward to this Newsletter.

Btw max5ty, why not charge us Warrior Forum members the regular cost of $12 year ??

That's a steal if your enjoyable and very insightful posts here are going to be anything like this
      Newsletter

I say charge us. You could probably get a couple hundred subscribers if not more with a link in your Sig for this newsletter.

Update: So, I'm running a little late here. A lot has happened since I last posted.

I was actually starting to feel like I had the flu when I last posted. Turns out I have Covid. I think I got it at a New Year's thing where one of our friend's 6-year-old son was diagnosed with it a couple of days later. A couple of other people have also tested positive.

It is like a bad flu. My nose was plugged and my throat was sore. According to the doctor, the symptoms have changed. It's no longer normal to lose your sense of smell or taste (which I didn't).

I was vaccinated previously so I think that helped a lot...

as well as being in decent shape and eating right. Today I'm feeling a whole lot better.

Anyway, I decided to use Beehiiv for the newsletter platform.

I chose that for several reasons:

    1. You can have up to 2500 sign-ups for free. As the Newsletter grows, I can upgrade.

    2. You can send as many emails as you want for free.

    3. They include a website builder which I think is pretty awesome.

    4. They offer subscription forms and magic links.

    5. Plus, the free plan has analytics.

    6. The site was started by former newsletter people (Morning Brew).

I'm not an affiliate of Beehiiv...just letting you know what I've decided and why.

My next decision is whether to complete the first newsletter or, start getting signups right away.

I'm leaning toward just getting signups...

maybe as a waiting list or not, I'm still deciding.

I've also been working on the copywriting of the landing page...which I'm almost done with. I think I'll have the page up and ready by tomorrow.

Sorry for the delay. I'm still feeling a little sluggish but I'm coming back around

Edit: The first business I decided to detail is one that if you can't make $1500 a month (minimum) with a simple plan I'm giving, then you probably won't be able to do anything else. It's simple, easy, and, almost drop-dead foolproof. It's better than postcards, but it's in the same category. But, doesn't take any face to face selling. I'm excited to tell you about it.

So this year got off to a very rough start...

but, I'm ready to tackle anything ahead.

I've decided not to do the newsletter about starting a business...

and instead decided to focus on a hungry market that is easy to capture.

I decided to go with the spirituality market. Those who want to explore their spiritual selves...

I don't think 'what' I focus on in this thread is as important as 'how' I focus on it and build an audience.

The methodology of what I do is the most important part.

On February 15 I will post a landing page.

I don't expect anyone on the forum to sign up...but, if you want to follow how I plan on building this to a profitable newsletter you're welcome to follow along.

I honestly cannot say that Iam not a little bit disappointed. Was really looking forward to the "start your own biz" newsletter.

That being said it will still be cool to follow along with your newsletter and the whole "spirituality" niche. That is a topic that Iam heavily interested in to say the least.

Anyway, best of luck and really look forward to signing up with your Landing Page

I'll just do the biz thing once in a while by forum posts.

I decided some things would just take up way too much time...and really didn't see how the time invested was worth the outcome.

So, what I chose has a huge following and will take a whole lot less work.

I don't mind work...but I just have too many other things going on. Too many rentals, and too many other business concerns to give my previous idea its fair share of time.

    Spirituality!

    * sigh *

'tis like the tangible vapor inspires an' animates us all.

Plus also unites evrywan since & till'n kinda whenevah.

From Pepsi commercials to Beckett, hacktasmal benevolence to Lump It.

Gotta figure Bruce Lee had it right in that famous quota his 'bout watah said KEEP FRICKIN' PISSIN'.

Dunno, soon as the well dries up, the heavens can go shit ummselves, I guess.

Or does loominayschwaahn forevah loominate the othawise loomlessly unknit?

"Huge gap in the market here, filled mostly fulla nonsense right now less'n I ridin' high in the saddle."

Mebbe marinade this tagline with chilli & beer till'n you gaht a 'rignl take on this gapin' vestibyool.

Thing is, the closah you git to the truth, the more the suckahs become more leechlike.

An' you don't evah want suckahs, nevah for nuthin'.

We have e-mail newsletters working very well for us. On our websites people subscribe to updates of educational programs.
Twice a week we prepare letters for our base with offers of educational courses from our partners.
Great conditionally free source of traffic. We are satisfied with the results. The open rate of our emails is at the level of 30-35%. CTR - 8-9%.

Gotta figure if'n I show (with a promise to be provocatively entertainin'), the mods will kill it.

Could happin tamara if'n they can quit wastin' their lives on tryin' to seem all important an' assoom the mantle of hoomanity-friendly SLAYAHS.

No ... waitaminnit ... don't evrywan who figures they important ultimately transform into no SLAYAH?

I had tried to delete this thread but couldn't.

Looking back, I posted this prematurely as a project I had started last year took off and is keeping me busy.

I understand the comments about the waiting.

I have no problem with the thread being deleted and someone else posting their journey with a project.

I still plan on doing this but am unsure when I will start.

    I apologize.
