Ok, this may sound dumb, but I have always relied on a premade themes (free and paid). So I really don't know how the process works.

I am trying to give one of my sites a makeover. But I am not sure if I understand the process.

You hire a designer to design a new WordPress site for you. Once he or she is done, do you need to again hire a developer to build a theme based on it, or what the designer gives you is basically a complete theme ready to be installed?...

Thanks in advance.

Technically there are two jobs here: that of a graphics designer creating a mockup (usually presented in Photoshop PSD files) and someone who specializes in the WordPress theme creation who would turn the mockup into a functional theme that you would upload like the premade themes you're already familiar with.

At the same time, most people you hire to do the job would expect you to want something you can upload on your site, so generally you're paying to get both tasks done at once. The only exception would be if you specifically hire a graphics designer to do the mockup and then take it to another person/company to turn it into a theme.

For your situation, I'd simply find a company that does both in one package. You should expect them to send you one or more mockups for your approval, then once you pick one they would implement it as a theme you can upload on your site.

This is good advice. Find someone to implement on Freelancer or a similar talent marketplace.

yeah i agree find a company that do both task, although there are some individual who do that task, sometimes its true that a good designer is not a good coder and a good coder is not a good designer...

I think outsource to someone, who does both designing & development both would be better.

Well, custom design needs two people, a designer and a developer.

Designer will work on user interface and developer will help you to add some functionality and DB connections.

But If you purchased theme (Free or Paid) you just need a developer who will integrate your data into it,
