32 Most Important SEO Tips

Following these simple tips will definitely boost your traffic and search engine rankings for free.

1. Make sure your site is not under construction, incomplete, with little or no unique content.

2. When your site is ready, submit it to Google, Yahoo, MSN and ASK.com. Consider also submitting to other search engine but most of them are powered by these four leading search engines. Submit also your site to reputable high PR web directories, open directories, yellow pages and social bookmarking sites such as del.icio.us, furl, etc.

3. Submit your sitemap to Google, Yahoo, MSN and ASK.com (sitemap for search engines usually in XML format)

4. Offer sitemap to your site visitors for easy page navigation. (sitemap for visitors in HTML format)

5. Create unique and rich content sites. Avoid duplicate content. Do not create multiple pages, sub-domains, domains, mirror sites or sites with different domain names but same content.

6. Check your keywords and make sure they are relevant and actually are contained in your site. Avoid keywords stuffing.

7. Use text instead of images in your content, links and important subjects.

8. Make your TITLE and ALT tags descriptive, simple and keyword rich. Avoid irrelevant and repeated keywords.

9. Title tag should be 60-80 characters maximum length.

10. Meta tag description should be 160-180 characters including spaces. (about 25-30 words)

11. Meta Tag keywords must be 15-20 words maximum.

12. Optimize Pages with Headings (H1, H2, H3..) containing your site's primary keywords.

13. Validate your CSS and HTML. Check for errors and broken links.

14. If your site contains dynamic pages(i.e., the URL contains a "?" character), make sure you use SEO friendly URLs. Search engines' spiders having difficulty indexing dynamic pages.

15. Maximum links per page must be fewer than 100. Avoid the risk of being flagged as link farm by search engines.

16. Use Lynx as text browser to check your site. (Lynx source distribution directory)

17. Allow search bots (good ones) to crawl your sites without session IDs or arguments that track their path through the site. Using these techniques may result in incomplete indexing of your site.

18. Check your web server/host if it supports the If-Modified-Since HTTP header. It tells search engines whether your content has changed since last crawled your site. It will save you bandwidth, resources and avoid server overload.

19. Use Robots.txt file to manage and control search engine spiders in indexing your site. You can allow and disallow spiders and choose directories you want to be crawled and indexed. But with bad bots or spam bots you need to modify your HTACCESS file to properly and effectively manage bots or spiders. Visit The Web Robots Pages to learn more about Robots.txt file.

20. Do not attempt to present different content to search engines than what you show to your site visitors.

21. Avoid dirty tricks and exploiting loop holes to improve search engines ranking.

22. Avoid links to bad neighborhood such as web spammers, link farms, phishing, hacker, crack, gambling, porn and scam sites. Linking to them will greatly affects your search engine rankings.

23. Do not attempt to join in link schemes, excessive reciprocal links or excessive link exchanging and link exchange web rings.

24. Do not use unauthorized programs or online tools to submit your site, check page rankings and other automated queries. Avoid the risk of being flagged as spam.

25. Do not use hidden text and links. Show to search engines what you show to your vistors. It will greatly affect your site's reputation.

26. Do not attempt to create pages that contains phishing, scam, viruses, trojans, backdoors, spyware, adware and other malicious programs.

27. Make your site useful and informative.

28. Improve your link building. Link to high PR websites. Quality of relevant links are far more important than quantity. Links will greatly improve your site's visibility, popularity and rankings. Search engines consider links as votes to your site.

29. Check your page link structure. Every page should be reachable by a single static text link.

30. Be extra careful in purchasing SEO services. Some uses illegal and questionable ways to improve rankings.

31. Do not buy or sell links.

32. Do not create sites that contains purely affiliate links and no valuable content that are useful to the users.

DO NOT submit your website to search engines.

Search engines have PERFECT ability to find your pages without extra assistance such as submitting your sitemap.

if you want to submit sitemaps to a search engine, why not do it the correct way and save many hours in the process.

create a ROR.XML file and add the necessary information to your header tag, the search engine bot will then read this file.

Not needed, if a site's structure is created properly, then there is no cause for a human site map. However, I agree, having one, does help in SE Rankings, but it needs to be structured properly.

MYTH... Google as of about 8 months or so ago, they do INDEX pages with 3 or 4 more parameters after the ? mark.

However, I agree, they should be SE friendly... these should be done with .htaccess re-writes.

Totally false. More links you have on your pages directed to other pages of relevancy, in fact helps rankings. take wikipedia site for instance.

Not "always" necessary, but in the most part, I agree.. however..

PR0 pages linked to PR0 pages that are highly relevant can still out rank sites that you recommend.

Pr is just a measure of importance of a site, from site to site, over a period of time.

If you already have a description, it can take less than 30 seconds to plugin 5 to 10 keywords. For most of the major search engines, it can be shown that they really don't care. Kelvin, dude, no one said you would get penalized for having a keyword meta tag. Google just doesn't use it to rank pages due to previous manipulations it once had when it was included in google's alogo'.

The only time google will use the keyword meta tag, is for showing the correct ads for adsense pages (amongst other elements) and pay per click with adwords.. other than that, if people feel that it helps in the terms of ranking a page, then they're climbing up the wrong tree.

That was put in my be for clarification, as to proper use. It was not meant to be attributed to you.

Since I was advocating adding keywords, I wanted to make sure it was done properly. I will agree at this time that it does not appear to help in ranking, but since it can help in other areas, as you noted, why not take 20 seconds and add one or two.

Good list. I would also argue that #14 is not really valid any more. I have a site that uses PHP and does not use a SEO friendly URL plugin (couldn't get it to work properly). Google has had no trouble indexing the individual pages this way. It may have been true, but I think search engines understand that more and more sites are going this way so they need to be able to deal with dynamic pages.

hi! regarding tip #14 .... SEO friendly URLs... My question is why Wordpress uses permalink in the form of SEO friendly urls (easy to read and remember urls)....they are just following the Google guidelines?

The advantage of this type of urls... is that ... not just friendly to search engines but also to humans... Even humans can read and remember this url.... compared to those %???%%$$$....

This is only a simple way for the users to remember our sites...especially when the user don't know how to bookmark a web page/site...

Very true. I had one NMOC site I was working on that had a page-1 ranking in google within a few days of promotion. I never indexed the site with google, not once.

On the other hand, a rather large content site I'm currently working on has at least a dozen high-PR backlinks, 4 articles with backlinks and a very thorough Squidoo page linking to it. I submitted it to Google immediately after I got the index page up and running. Google last spidered it... August 5th. Very annoying. However, I am excited to wake up one day and see that my site has jumped from non-existant to the first or second page for a moderately competitive search term.

So in short, DONT index your page with search engines. Digg your site, twitter it, facebook it, add a squidoo page, etc. Article submissions with backlinks are also very powerful, as you probably already know.

this one's funny because it isn't necessary. sometimes spiders find your site, it's better to submit it on social bookmarking services

Tip #15 is definitely true. That is maximum outbound links should be fewer than 100. Please check GOOGLE's Webmaster Guidelines before commenting "it's not true". If it's not true, then you simply not following Google Guidelines.

Why put all the 100 outbound links in one page... you are free to create thousands of pages... to scatter your outbound links...

Better to follow the google guidelines on the maximum number of outbound links per page.... that is 100

anyway you have the choice... greater than or less than 100 .....

the safer or the riskier....which do you prefer?

Actually this tip#14 is not for Google alone.... it was adapted to all search engines. Other search engines not yet upgraded their crawlers... so it is still beneficial to follow this tip #14.

And SEO friendly URLs are good both for Search Engines and humans too. Human can read it and remember it easily... even without bookmarking it...and get higher percentage on returning visitors..

Simple explanation...

Did you noticed that... "you're in top 5th position".... if you will just follow this tip #7...

The benefits are ....

1.your site will have greater speed ( or double in speed because you have smaller page and fewer HTTP request which is related and can affect SEO)....

--- please remember the 30k ideal page size (100k max)--- -- w/c is important to show your page in 5-15 seconds-----> very important to your visitors and PLUS factor to your site.

2. You can save your resources such as bandwidth ( which is expenses on your part)

3. and you can get a better position than the "5th position" you are telling. You can hit better than this definitely.

You can notice this especially when your site is getting bigger.

This tip is for better SEO and Speed Optimization of your site ( as suggested by Google) and definitely not a MYTH.

When you do SEO... Do not Target the 5th Position.... Target The FIRST Position

Anyway, you can decide which is better for you.

Actually there are two options... You submit manually or let the crawlers find your site and indexed. Submit your sitemap or wait for the spiders to access that through Robots.txt.

The benefits of submitting it manually to search engine...like in Google.


1. you can monitor the health of your sitemap.... regarding unreachable urls, broken links, 404 error ..etc compared to just letting the search engines.... As a webmaster monitoring is very important.

2. Did you notice and compared the number of indexed URLs when you manually submit it...than just waiting for search engines.

The indexing may be slow... but I noticed.. Indexed urls are greater in number than the one you are telling.

Just like what happened to my site.... it jumped to PR2 (I bought my domain last january 2008... developed the program/content/testing... and officially online last April 2008... And now not bad for me, as White hat follower..... I'm PR2.... in 3-4 months...Doing it consistently can hit PR5 in 10 months.) ... and skipped PR1 when Google update my page rank. Google may be slow in updating your PR, but Google is still fair in giving ranking.

Try the manual submission and the automatic .... and compare the number of indexed URLs... and you will notice which is better...

I noticed this with Yahoo, MSN and ASK.com. I resubmit my sitemap and noticed improvement on the number of indexed urls.

Just like what everyone else said above. The fastest way to get indexed is to submit to Digg.com, submit articles, add your link to a page already in the Google index that you own, get a link on another website, etc. This will get you indexed faster, and I have had many websites indexed in under 24 hours doing this. If you have a blog pinging it will help a ton as well.

13. Validate your CSS and HTML. Check for errors and broken links.

Great and important point. People can do this over at The W3C Markup Validation Service. If you aren't sure how to make your code validate so there are fewer errors outsource through Guru.com or GetAFreelancer.com and request to have your code validated. (I just checked out my blog, and I need to fix some errors!)

Search engines don't have as many problems as they used to, but I recommend the use of them for multiple reasons. One is that having the keyword in the URL will help tell the visitors and the search engines what to expect on your page. It also looks cleaner in the browser, and also it may be easier for visitors to remember your page this way. I love SEO friendly URLs.

What's wrong with this tip 32? This is a very good tip.

Affiliate links are good as long as there are valuable content on your site. Valuable content make your visitors to come back.

Tip 32 is the same criteria and requirement of DMOZ. Having your site listed in DMOZ is a big adavantage, because your site will be automatically referred to hundreds of open directories,once you've been approved.

If you are presently earning $20k/month and followed this tip #32... Definitely your income will increase... probably double or triple. That means you're not maximizing your income potentials.

If you are thinking of a long term and stable business just follow this tip 32.

If your website has tons of horrible advertisements on them people will just leave and never come back. The power of returning visitors is enormous and something that can separate your website from the competition. Write good, solid content and you will have return visitors. I think tip #32 was great!

Another good thing is to submit articles to articles directories with high PR like ezinearticles and to get the rss urls from them and then submit the rss urls to rss feed aggregators like friendfeed, and feedage, etc.

Another good thing is to submit articles to articles directories with high PR like ezinearticles and to get the rss urls from them and then submit the rss urls to rss feed aggregators like friendfeed, and feedage, etc.

Good point. I have articles there but did not notice there are RSS feeds for the articles. I thought RSS feed is mostly for blog posts. I will do that as suggested.

it's not a RULE, it's a guideline... and if it was totally advised against it, then tell me why Wikipedia has pages with over 100 links on it and still manage to rank for very broad terms.

the tip was to say use more content than images.

if you just had a page with images, the file size is going to be smaller, search engines don't take into account how long a page loads, they just calculate the total size of page that's made up of characters.

again, I stand by what I say... rankings with just image alt text is still posible, and sure, I could rank higher than 5th position for just an alt text if i pointed more links to my site, but in this case i hadn't..

stop replying to my posts thinking I don't know how to do SEO. The benefits are ....

1.your site will have greater speed ( or double in speed because you have smaller page and fewer HTTP request which is related and can affect SEO)....

why is it a good tip? why leave money on the table?

I have MANY sites in Dmoz, and most of them do have 301 redirect links to affiliate sites.

Stop giving me advice, I didn't ask for it. I make over $200k a month in affiliate commissions, through PPC, TV, Radio, Classified Ads and many other web 2.0 methods. And they aren't just normal websites, they are interactive sites, with MANY returning visitos and a contact list of over 400,000 people.

So figure, I must be doing something wrong.

Affiliate links are good as long as there are valuable content on your site. Valuable content make your visitors to come back.

Tip 32 is the same criteria and requirement of DMOZ. Having your site listed in DMOZ is a big adavantage, because your site will be automatically referred to hundreds of open directories,once you've been approved.

If you are presently earning $20k/month and followed this tip #32... Definitely your income will increase... probably double or triple. That means you're not maximizing your income potentials.

If you are thinking of a long term and stable business just follow this tip 32.

I can comment from personal experience about hidden content not visible to users but visible to search engines, it really does work and improves your traffic substantially, and in fact search engines have no way of detecting this. However if you have serious competition then they will surely rat you out (which happened to me) and as a result get your site removed from google as a penalty. I had to then play dumb with google and tell them it was done unintentionally blah blah blah... and had my site re-instated to the index after about 30 days (with the hidden keywords removed, obviously).

If you want to try this I would recommend getting a throw away URL (not your main one), trying it there and linking it to your site, or creating a duplicate of your site on it.

The method I used was pretty nice though... you use CSS positions and z-index to layer your site, so that the main content appears at the topmost layer (for users to see), and a whole list of keywords appears at the bottom (for bots to see). Worked like a charm!

Pertaining to #31 on the list (selling links)... as an unrelated (perhaps) thread/question, I am wondering if selling text links can drop page rank?

My site www.cooking-solutions.com has run at PR5-6 for several years until a couple months ago when I dropped to PR3. I couldn't figure out why since I have a large content-based site, until I thought about the latest Google slap around the same time. I have tons of links out, and yes, some of them are paid ads. Definitely a small percentage of overall links out, but do any of you know if this would drop my PR since I don't use "nofollow" anywhere in my code?
